Overview

The M badge on the bootlid of this Z4 coupe isn’t just a pretty thing to look at. It means this low-slung little car is equipped with a three-and-a-quarter-litre straight-six capable of summoning 338 horses to pull it with all the gusto the BMW M division could breed into them.

Opening the bonnet reveals an engine bay which hardly looks capable of containing such a monstrous powerplant. It really shows the design ethos behind this model: take a small sports car and put a properly powerful engine in it. All this fits inside a neat package which still looks good all these years later. Sharp creases, sculpted body panels and black alloy wheels all add to the appeal.

The bright red paintwork helps to ensure this car doesn’t hide its light under a bushel, although once you step inside everything resumes its usual Germanic calmness. The black leather M Sport seats provide plenty of lateral support, and everything remains very clean and tidy. There’s even enough boot space to store actual luggage, making this the perfect car for a weekend getaway, preferably somewhere with hills and twisty tarmac.

Accompanying the car is a large history file, original set of documents, and plenty of invoices for parts and servicing. In recent years it has received new shock absorbers and springs, as well as various brake parts.

• There has been a repair to the front undertray, with some expanding adhesive visible upon close inspection
• The 18-inch alloy wheels all look to be in very good condition, with no significant scuffs or scratches that we could see aside from a small stone chip to the offside rear alloy, which has been touched in

Mechanical

Summary

Technically, you could class it as a hatchback. But it’s more a practical sports car with rear-wheel drive and one of the all time great straight-six engines under the bonnet.
