I looked out at 0325 and couldn't see anything---do they come and go or constant ?

Perhaps I didn't give it enough time.

I think tonight is supposed to be just as good.

Imagine rainbows only happened at certain locations, would we flock there? Is this more technically impressive for some reason?

Watched it last night through my phone but could feel Charlie Brooke’s taking notes so did some star gazing with my eyes instead.

Don’t get it
It's incredibly rare down here for a start, the science behind it is a 1000 times more interesting than a rainbow too.

Secondly it's linked to events on the Sun which have the potential to severely damage our electronic infrastructure which I don't think rainbows do hehe Google 'Carrington Event'.

In the past reports of Aurora in the UK have normally coincided with cloudy nights or it just doesn't happen. But last night when kicking the dogs out for their pre bed wee the sky just looked "kinda weird". The more I looked the better it got.

My phone just blew the photos out. Over exposed or over processed them. So I got my little Panasonic TZ-70 and a mini tripod for some 30 second exposures which were far more representative of what was actually going on.

The light trail is a plane on approach to Gatwick

This one was a 60 second to try and get a better trail from the planes.

I’m not an astrophysicist…. But it came over my house at about 11:40 and moved slowly like a cloud away down the valley and was gone by about 12:30 after that nothing at all.

Just a watch out for tonight. General advice is to look north. The lights were visible to the south for me, and only visible to the north later on as the night progressed.

Look everywhere in the sky! Our house was blocking most of the aurora and only when we went round the side of the house is when we found it. We nearly went back inside disappointed when we couldn't see anything to the north yet other people were posting photos.

You can see them from Kent as I've seen posts from the Herne Bay area before when the Aurora is strong enough - a good view north and low light pollution is key, however last night was somethinge else!

I often visit a place called Pett Level, near Hastings when I go spotting for the nothern lights as it's not too far to get to by car and there isn't much light pollution and I've now spotted the lights from there on 3 different occasions.

Last night was the best display I've ever seen as I managed to see the lights by naked eye in colour for the first time and it got so strong it was lighting up the ground and reflecting off the sea and to be honest it felt like I was in the arctic regions but just a little warmer smile

Here's a few pics I grabbed:

One off my phone (bad edit to cut out some headlights):

Who knows, won't be as strong and currently pretty hazy down in Surrey but I'll be around for part 2 if it does...
