Pairs Matchplay last night (betterball) in glorious conditions, 20c and very little wind.

We were giving away 8 and 13 shots. We both played pretty well and dovetailed nicely to win the match 4&3.
I only have the singles scratch Matchplay round 1 left to play now which is nice, playing a chap off 3 so I'll get 1 shot - should be a good game..
Great win and one thing I am deeply jealous of - shots in a scratch matchplay. At our place it's flat, no shots at all....

Ouch! Never fun giving that many away - especially when it gets to 2 shots a hole!

I'm a moron, it is a Scratch Matchplay so no shots!
My partner and I have the Yorkshire Foursomes next Friday, that should be good and the neutral venues are always decent. Foursomes is such a tough format to play..

In fairness people normally get that many shots for a reason - I'd suggest unless they have a worldy you should be fine - it tends to become more of a mental challenge at that point than a golfing one - focusing, not getting complacent etc.

Every year I moan about how much of an arse ache it is organising matches. Then at the start of the season I still enter them all.

I entered two pairs knockouts with different partners and two singles knockouts this year. Didn’t bother with the scratch knockout this year.

Fitting them all in is difficult, especially against people who despite being retired, can only play at 10:27 on every second Tuesday.

Trying to work out how many shots the boy gets in or better ball matches when playing someone off 1 is interesting.

The other is greensomes which is a fun format with my mate who hits it miles off the tee but can be wild at times. I’d prefer foursomes as it’s a proper test of one’s minerals.

My foursome partner has announced he isn't joining again this year as his wife is expecting baby number 2, so I've just gone for the usual singles and the scratch. I'm more focusing on what opens I can fit in this year. Definitely hoping to do the Wem Bowl at Hawkstone and there is a 36 hole meat grinder of a comp at Conwy I'm considering, along with a couple of local ones.

Also booked the first golf holiday with the guys since before COVID, which I forgot to mention. There used to be a big group of us would go down to the Ashbury in Devon, but at short notice a smaller group of us are heading to MacDonald Portal in Cheshire. Never played it but looks great on the website - deal was pretty good too - 2 nights, 3 games, breakfast and dinner for 329. Not quite what we used to get from Devon but this is a slightly classier place smile

I've had to set up a spreadsheet to work out the shots for pairs BB and pairs Foursome matches.

Wholly agree about arranging matches. The pair we played last night were a nightmare to sort out.

'Don't like weekends'
'nothing before 5pm'
'not a Thursday'

That sorta thing. Luckily they got in each other's way in the end, the older guy was trying to give putting tips to his partner and they missed pretty much everything..

Hello,
I've tried all the free apps for scoring, GPS tracking etc.
Wife bought me a new se apple watch for Christmas - use it for work and gym.....and don't like paying for two of the same thing if you get my drift (tight yorkie here).

ANYWAY, AS I've Benn getting into more golf and wanting to get better (played for years with no yardage knowledge other than estimated sight)....so I bought Arccos sensors for my clubs and paired to iPhone and use shot selection from iWatch.

This pushed the cost boat out......and at first I was disappointed with how many shots arccos 'missed'......buthaving persevered for say 8 rounds now I absolutely love the setup.....not cheap though at £140/year.

A friend has the Tag watch, but at £2500.......I won't be buying that any time soon.

I do keep looking at Garmon as the GPS of another friend seems stronger than arccos.......but more expensive. I am looking at the new shotscope for next year, but the app doesn't look as precise or well configured as arccos.

For now I'm sticking with arccos and have got really into the post round analysis with a beer!

You can get the Tag app for the Apple watch, think it's £50ish a year for the sub.

Wasn’t me, but man what a lovely morning to be out!

I played 9 at Deanwood Park near Newbury before work on Friday, the golf was absolutely awful hehe

Can’t hit a ball properly with an iron to save my life at the moment. Ah well, I’ll get there. I’m still just really enjoying being out an playing at the mo.

It was a lovely day and nice to have a bit of run on the ball. I managed 28 points which I was reasonably happy with considering I was not playing very well and blobbed 2 of the first 4 holes. Lost balls on the first, third, fifth and seventeenth didn't help either. None of the shots were bad, just the rough was very thick and even though we saw the ball land to within a few feet we still couldn't find them. Chipping and putting were pretty good though.

First club major comp for me this weekend. 36 holes over two days with a cut for the top 25 after day 1.

Have managed to get out a few times over the last few weeks and it hasn’t felt good so wasn’t expecting much - just focussed on being pleased to get out on a day with nice weather and no wind. !

Managed to get it round for a nett 72 which sees me through to tomorrow for the final round in 6th place after day 1, 7 shots back.

Still not expecting much but am glad that I kept a card going today.

Usual story there then.

My club states in the byelaws you have to give a date on weekends and in the week.

Well, had my match last night in glorious conditions.

Giving 28 shots was always going to be a tough ask…. and I was 2 down through 3 despite only being 1 over the card!

Played some really good golf but found myself 2 down through 9. However, hit some stellar iron shots on the back nine and ended up winning 3&2!

Consecutive birdies on 14 and 15 knocked the stuffing out of him.

Good fun - it certainly concentrated the mind and made me take the shots on, which I think helped.

Stunning evening! Rough is really getting up.

First tee:

View walking from 5th tee - 5th green on the right, 6th tee just to left of 5th green and 9th hole straight ahead back to clubhouse:

15th green, rolled that in for a 3:

Shot an 85 gross at Harding Park today. Absolutely made up with that from the back tees! What a course. Greens were a tad patchy in places & were pretty slow for a ‘PGA Tour’ course that’s held a major. But given the weather San Fran gets, I thought it was great. No real stand out holes until the final 3 BUT the cypress tress were stunning & the view across to the Olympic course was stunning.

Got paired with a nice local chap & a young college golfer who played to a +5.7. Talk about a different game. He finished -4 through 9 & had to leave as was playing at Stanford in a comp.

Just a pity it was foggy!

Good luck for today!

Friendly knock last night, gross 75 and lost 1 down to a mate. Tough old school.
Level gross front 9 was nice
