Absolute hogwash. Our best by a country mile. The natural tendency when picking “others” is a selective memory and cherry picking them only at their best. Well I’ll give you Broad, Tyson, Statham, Fred, Beefy at their best against Jimmy at his best and tell em: go on then, outbowl him. Ain’t going to happen, match each other certainly, but all of them hit absolute heights that can’t be “bettered” per se. So then you ask how long they did it for: well ain’t nobody touching 2 decades of taking every international batting line up on and apart home and away.
Struggled in Aus, you say? Well compare and contrast Jimmys figures in Aus with anybody else then…might surprise you…

In the end you stand Jimmy with the best ever across everybody. MM, Holding, Ambrose, Walsh, Wasim & Younis, Glenda, Lillee & Thompson - and like the English boys, he outlasted them all as a top gun. Even the paragons of longevity: CA & CW. Whilst taking more wickets.

The best. And then some. Fred said they’d be bloody tired taking more his 300+…dbl it Fred, over 20yrs.
As ever Jimmy only proves the oldest trueism in England… you want the job done properly - ring Lancashire smile
And you accuse me of spouting hogwash. There is no way he'd get into an all time XI. He's been a great bowler, but I don't recall any Broad-esque matching winning spells.

You'd take him over Glenn McGrath or Wasim Akram? I don't even rate him as comparable, let alone better. He's behind Trueman and Willis (and in terms of figures not even in the same league as Sidney Barnes but we'll excuse that as no-one alive saw him play) in the English pantheon, and way down the list of the all time greats. His true greatness is in his remarkable longevity, not his brilliance as a bowler.

I rate him, but not as highly as some.

Couldn’t have put it better myself. Particularly the point about calling Lancashire wink

Born in Littleborough. Lived in Heywood. Support Bury. If I could do a laughing emoji for that I would wink

‘Greatest’ is always a subjective issue. I would confine defining him as being the best pacer England have produced and I certainly agree about his longevity. I completely disagree with you about his brilliance however, but I respect your point of view.

Hi everyone. Just a note to say that the first Test of the summer at Lord’s will be my last Test.

Yep, confirmed.

Surprised he isn't bowing out at Old Trafford. I guess Lord's will have to do. Leaves as an absolute legend and a great of the game.

It would be ironic if he picked up an injury beforehand

I think deep down he'll be very disappointed. From the tone of his announcement and also from the news from yesterday and meeting with McCullum, McCullum has told him now is the time to step aside. It doesn't feel like Jimmy's decision ultimately. Whether it is the right decison, can be debated.

It’s the right time and right decision. I bow down to no man in my regard for the Burnley Lara, but the plaster has to be ripped off. Jimmy has had the greatest run of all, he is invariably more effective at Lords than OT anyway and it’s absolutely not a Jimmy thing to bow out bowling from his own end. That’s the kind of thing a Slurrey player would do, or a Tyke.
Give us a humid overcast day please weather Gods and let Jimmy at em.

Well that's guaranteed a sell-out on the final day at Lord's!

If Sunak has an ounce of sense, which is debatable, he should get the Cabinet Office to rubber-stamp a Knighthood, and get the King to perform the ceremony in the middle at the close of play.

Our deluded friend appears to be trying to compare England's most successful bowler with others of a byegone age, but the game is different now - the likes of Barnes, who played in 'obnail boots and spent t'week down t'pit would go round the ground if they were faced with a modern batsman, as would Trueman. Jimmy's contribution isn't just measured in wickets, but also his ability to tie the opposition down - he rarely goes for more than 3rpo in a Test. Which makes opposing batsmen take chances against the other bowlers.

Jimmy Anderson is the greatest pace bowler ever to grace an England side. And his stats prove it. Knocking over a few Windies batsmen to equal or exceed Warne's total would be nice, but bowling spin is a world away from pace, and demands less physically. McGrath, Broad and others run close, but none have the guile or ability to swing the ball both ways as Jimmy.

Thank you, Jimmy. For everything.

The true test is who replaces him. Even at 42 no one is close. End of an era and a new Jimmy won’t come along anytime soon. Unfortunately…

Sad news but highly anticipated , I think lots of us England fans take for granted just how good he has been,

42 in July , 186 tests, 700 wickets averaging under 26 are truly fantastic figures. What a remarkable career he's had

I just hope he looks after himself as his knees could really be a problem as he gets older. I'm struggling having two opps on my right knee with another to come & I was just a Saturday & Sunday Surrey local club trundler.

Hmmm. I've had my first game today in nearly 30 years and Jimmy announces he's retiring. Coincidence????

Make way lads, 43 years old, fat, autistic, can't walk after bowling 4 overs today. I'm a shoe in.

Was going to come at some point soon.

It'd be great to see him match/beat 2nd...but am not sure it'll happen.

Saw him take 500, and will see his last match

From the clips going around of his bowling earlier today he looked pretty dangerous. Hopefully a real asset in the T20 WC but reckon we'll be lucky to see him bowl another red ball for England.
