Near misses - the thread of self control

Ah, the duoface Reverso. Happy to say that one was not a near miss for me. Not even close. Absolutely gorgeous thing, punches way above it's price tag. Mine's a Day and Night.
Was a lovely thing indeed. Just couldn’t justify the price right now. Enjoy your Day & Night!Portofino said:

In your pic I could just make out that the first digit of the proce was a 1, "can't be right" I thought, so I checked the WOS website. Yeah, I'd struggle to spend that much on any watch. Mine was 2nd hand via C24, I did get it about six years ago, but it was less than a third of that price.
Bought this Blackbay 41 for a friend’s special birthday, it is so good, wore so well, I nearly bought two.
Hesitation, as it would be terribly embarrassing if we both arrived at the pub wearing the same one.
Replacing the stolen 16610
Many a night hesitating over replacing my stolen sub, but I can’t bring myself to pay the market price, especially as they sell for more than I paid an AD for a new Yachtmaster.

Had wanted an IWC Portugieser for ages, went & tried it on & it felt ordinary & for whatever reason just didn’t do it for me. Glad I tried it on rather than just online buying.
I also wanted an IWC Portuguese Chrono for ages. I lusted after one ever since seeing it worn by Ryan Goslings character in the movie 'The Big Short'. It is achingly beautiful. I bought one (without ever seeing one in the flesh) about 3 years ago when used prices dipped to about £3200, and then basically never wore it. Tried it on a few times and found it stunning, but it just wasn't for me. I just wasn't feeling it. It sat in a box for 3 years and I sold it a few months ago. I think I made about £100, so it wasn't all bad.I made an offer on this and the seller accepted.
It's a Nautilus from the late 50's early 60's and has the notoriously unreliable 505 electric movement. Sadly the seller got straight back in touch to say it's not keeping time. Whilst my local watchmaker will service these, there are only two watchmakers in the world who can repair them - no one has the parts anymore.
So, for the moment this is a near miss, although the seller has promised to get back in touch when it's going properly.
EDIT.
An update on marital bliss and the potential for watch purchasing based eviction: My shed now has a concrete base and concrete block 2' stub walls, but no woodwork or roof. It is filling nicely with water.

More self control required. This is up for an asking proce of 360 EUR + shipping. Plus VAT too as it would be an import. It's 38mm with 18mm lugs, a perfect size for a vintage watch.
My head says buy it, I can't find a logical reason not to. It fits my collecting theme, 60s / 70s, perfect dial, a wee bit different, within budget. But my heart hasn't quite caught up with my head.

I have not purchased a watch for a couple of years now. The collection (and subsequent pricing) got out of hand.
There are many watches I would still like to acquire; one very reasonable - the other is my grail watch.
1. The Omega Planet Ocean 38mm Titanium
2. The Patek 5124G-011
Sitting back, not rushing, - hoping prices soften and availability of reference pieces to the market come soon.

More near misses from me. These are absolute bargains, gorgeous and right up my street. I can't really explain why they're 'near misse's & not 'incoming'.
This 1972 Bulova has a rather lovely patina on it's original dial. Sadly it needs attention, the watch stops around midnight as the date changes over. But then the sell is only asking 85 Euros. I am sorely tempted, if it didn't have issues I would have bought it immediately.
On the other hand there is nothing wrong with this Anfibio. It looks rather minty, for 80 Euros it's a steal. But somehow this one just isn't rocking my boat.

I am in the very fortunate position that I can soon afford my grail watch and fear I do not have the self control to let the opportunity go past. I will be using a well known dealer to the PH watch masses when I want to start the search process so I know it will come with the correct provenance but I have been reading through the other thread in this section about watch robberies and that has put a bit of a dampener on things. Yes, I have watches already in the '000's price bracket but I have no fear in wearing these as they are not on the current list of "to be mugged for" items such as Rolex, Omega, Tudor etc. although the grail watch is a Rolex which is why I have the concern. I won't be in London, or any big city, very often going forward and certainly don't flaunt what I wear currently so am a bit more chilled than if I lived in a big city postcode and went out frequently in these areas. However, the idea of being spotted wearing and possible consequences are going to be there.
Would any of you put aside thoughts of robbery and self control if your grail watch came along and you were able to afford it?

The risk is not of losing the watch. As with cars if you can't afford to insure it, you can't afford to own it. The risk is of bodily harm should anyone try to steal it.
Frankly if you're sensible the risk is nearly zero. But if you're wearing it as a daily, in a T-Shirt and visiting watch shops in central London, then yeah you could wind up being targetted.
I would not let watch robberies stop me from buying something I wanted. But I would be careful about when, where and how that watch was worn. Nothing has recently changed in that respect really.

Let me know if I can, ahem, facilitate. I’m in the UK at the end of the month and again in the New Year, assuming English National Opera doesn’t completely implode this season. Yex GTR said:

Short answer, yes - I'd put aside those thoughts. Would any of you put aside thoughts of robbery and self control if your grail watch came along and you were able to afford it?
And I'd also steer well clear of the watch robbery thread; it's a unfortunate overspill from the NP&E cesspit into the watch forum, primarily contributed to by total nutters.

The upside to that is, the nutters pop up on the robbery and the Rolex bubble threads, so one knows show to avoid them. Guycord said:

If funds permitted, that would be the perfect 2 watch collection for me. Lovely. There are many watches I would still like to acquire; one very reasonable - the other is my grail watch.
