If you think its not worth having a real watch and can do with a fake then think twice! Is wearing a nice watch even worth it anymore frown

Tragic that anyone should lose their life over a watch, real or fake. I'm off to London in June and planning on leaving my good watches at home. I have a Citizen world timer which won't draw attention. The issue is I'm also planning on buying another nice watch while I'm there. Think I'll stick it in an Aldi shopping bag!

At least the sentences are appropriate.

Especially for the security guard, his actions were directly responsible for the sequence of events.

I know that no length of time is sufficient, but when you hear of suspended sentences etc etc this does seem more like it.

Well with that idiot Khan reelected mayor we can expect the descent into anarchy to continue. Perhaps next year you’ll need armed private security before venturing anywhere near the capital.

Classy, going for political point scoring over someone's death.

Didn’t London safety decrease under Khan?

I've said this before, thieves will not request you show the box and papers to prove authenticity before they attack you. If you're not familiar with your surroundings or are not comfortable wearing a watch, leave it at home, wearing a fake version of what you own is (IMO) insane on many levels. RIP to the poor lad.

Unfortunately this isn’t just a London, or big city thing.

A guy in my local provincial market town was targeted for a theft of the watch he was wearing with a guy hiding near where his car was parked and another on a getaway motorbike with a final getaway car 15 miles away.

Watch thefts are unfortunately the equivalent of the old fashioned bank job which isn’t worth the effort / risk any more.

Watches and Range Rovers, it's all these feral fking scum have left.

I've got a Seamaster that sits at home and gathers dust now, I don't even wear it to work as I had someone on a moped nearly cop I had it while driving out of croydon for work a few years ago.

On the South Coast last summer a couple of young females were targeting elderly males in towns and golf club car parks in Sussex, Hampshire and Dorset and pinching their Rolex watches. Poor old boys didn’t realise they were robbed for quite a while.

No idea, but London remains one of the safest capital cities in the world.

The tories like to tell everyone it's dangerous - presumably to undermine the democratically elected mayor, much to the displeasure of the retailers and tourist industry.

Christ what a load of utter balls.

Four out of 10 of all watch thefts are in London. Thefts from the person in London rose from 57,468 in 2022 to 72,756 by the spring of last year, with moped and e-bike gangs largely responsible. Nickie Aiken, the MP for the Cities of London and Westminster, has demanded more police on the streets. Her views echoed the complaint recently by Devin Narang, a prominent Indian businessman, that Indian executives were afraid to come to London because of muggings in Mayfair and other smart districts. “You don’t want to look over your shoulder all the time,” he said of London. “You don’t want to go to a city where you’re likely to be mugged in the streets… you can walk anywhere in Delhi and you won’t be mugged.”

I don't think you have ever had to not look over your shoulder in any large city.

Nice of you to preface your post with such an apt summary.

London is generally ranked 14th/15th safest city in the world. Higher for just capitals.

Yeah must just be a right wing conspiracy…

Make sure you wear and display your new Rolex prominently next time you visit.

You know that Numbeo's ratings are based on unreviewed questionnaires, not actual crime figures, right?

From the Wikipedia page:

"
The website's "Crime Index", intended to serve as an overall crime level estimate, is compiled from answers to user surveys, which have been processed by a Java-programmed backend to produce country- or city-level ratings on a 100-point scale, with higher values indicating worse crime. There is also a "Safety Index", with higher scores indicating a safer city.[19] Numbeo's data points on crime have been criticized by academics[20] and by the media as unreliable and, at times, misleading."

For data-based rankings London does well.

Yup.
Back in February I spent three weeks in India and wore a Rolex everywhere, Delhi, Goa and other places. I wore it whilst pretty drunk in bars and clubs and whilst walking around markets. It ended up being such that I didn't even give it a second thought, wearing the watch was no different to wearing a pair of shoes.

Obviously this is purely subjective ie its how I feel. However I've been around the block a few times and so tend to trust my gut instinct.

100% agree.
I think there was another high profile murder of a guy whose watches turned out to be fake....he has been flexing them on social media

Agree. I used to live in India (Mumbai) and would regularly stagger home pissed in the middle of the night, never had any bother at all, ever. I would never do that in London.
