Hover cart pulled a horse?

Didn't make it to the end before switching off
I got to that bit and went 'I can't do this tonight' and turned it off.

Harvesting grain by hand in a universe with interplanetary travel and hover carts. Righto.

Also, when they rode in on the horses, where did they land? Why didn't they just, you know, land closer? rofl

You all seem to be watching it, so Netflix thinks it's a smash hit and that they need to produce more of this tripe. Based on the first episode (I can't bring myself to call it a film) and the Critical Drinker's review where I saw more of the same crappy VFX on show I see absolutely no need to encourage Netflix to make more of the same by watching it.

Its obviously set itself up for another installment, as much as I love Sci-Fi I wont be watching the next one.
The only way to stop Netflix producing utter garbage like this is to literally not watch it and become a statistic.

Zack Snyder is proof that sometimes studios should interfere with films
More that he is proof that some directors shouldn't write movies.

If he has a competent writer, and the film suits his style, then he can produce a decent movie. Films he has any involvement in writing tend to be essentially garbage, though sometimes with some good visuals. See also Sucker Punch.

I don't know if it's me, but this whole 'write the theme tune, sing the theme tune' approach by directors is a modern thing since the 1st writers strike (along with having a pointless mid series break that seems to plague every tv show).

Writers should write, actors should act and directors should direct

I think what is a modern thing is the talentless writer-director and yes any changes that affected the slice of the pie going to writers may have contributed to this.

The talented writer-director has been around for decades. James Cameron wrote most of his movies for example.

I mostly agree, of course some actors or directors have written excellent material but this is very much the rare exception.

However I'd also add to it by saying competent writers should write. I think the writing is one of the most important elements of a film or show but lately it seems Hollywood are determined to hire hacks or writers with very little previous experience. I have my own thoughts on why this is happening which I don't want to get into here, but I can definitely say that a lot of the writing quality has taken a huge nose dive in recent years.

Hasn't there been a massive writers' strike in recent years? Must have affected quality of output enormously.

I won't say I watched this today, it was sort of playing in the background.
My take:

In a universe far away, the dastardly baddies in their super star destroyer thing, controlling the doom cannon, wear NATO jumpers.

The goodies should set up another A-team. That's the only place I've seen the main characters survive hundreds of plasma machine guns, while killing whole battalions of baddies with an axe and 3" pen knife.

An utter turd.

I think it's maybe more that there are more writer-producers and director-writers attached to streaming stuff than traditional film. And they're not going to be held to the same standard as a no mark writer or hired hand. It's assumed that they already know what's what or their 'vision' will prevail.

If this script had been submitted by a no one it would've gone straight out the window, the bin would be too good for it. Same goes for a lot of the Disney Star Wars stuff. No amateur would be given the time of day displaying those standards of storytelling.

Basically what my wife said, they're harvesting a continent by hand but have a hover cart. Why no hover combine harvester?
In Dune 2 the Fremen attack Harkonen soldiers with swords, then shoot down an ornithopter with laser guns.

Back in the day, stuff like this used to be referred to as ‘straight to video’

Now it’s just straight to Netflix

Back in the days of browsing a video rental shop for the Saturday night move, the missus and I once selected a film called Sub Down. Turned out to be utter, utter, utter, pish of the most gargantuan, colossal, ocean going variety. Since then, when we're considering a film, if someone says "looks like a bit of a Sub Downer", we move swiftly on.

Sadly, Rebel Moon passed the Sub Down test on seeing it available on Netflix, so we watched it. We were wrong. It's a massive Sub Downer.

Many times I've seen this film referred to as stealing the story from Seven Samurai. But I wonder how many people have actually see that film. At 3.5 hours long (including intermission) it's grainy black and white and unintelligible to most Western viewers without subtitles. I can't imagine it would appeal to many very many people unless they had a particular interest in post-war Japanese cinema.

I hadn't watched it, but frequent mentions on this thread alone plus a vague cultural awareness of its existence beforehand inspired me to dig it out and watch it. I had to do it in two sittings, and I can now see why the film was so influential. While I'm glad I took the time to watch it, I really can't imagine it would appeal to most viewers. As a bit of a "shinnichi" (Japanophile) I feel like a bit of a fake as I've never actually made it over to the land of the rising sun. After many things preventing me from serious travel for years, I'm planning a trip for later this year, around October time. I've been immersing myself in as much Japanese cultural learning as I can manage, and this film gave me a much better idea of how the feudal system worked over there before the modernisation.

So who out of you has actually seen Seven Samurai from start to finish?

It's been many years since I watched Seven Samurai. I remember it being quite slow and hard going, but that was probably due to the subtitles and runtime.

The original Magnificent Seven is a much easier watch and very good. There are a few other similar films.

Finally thought I’d watch this, so set aside this afternoon to watch both parts back to back. Figured it couldn’t possibly be as bad as made out.

It’s utter derivative ste, isn’t it? Didn’t even make it halfway through the first part. It’s literally scene after scene, story part after story part lifted from other sci-fi films and books.
