Ukrainian looks to mobilise prisoners.
While copying the russians looks bad I'd want to read the small print first; if it was non-violent/first time offenders being offered clemency in return for military service I could agree with it, a free-for-all with murderers and rapists being signed up then definitely not.

From my understanding yes that's the case only minor criminal offences are considered.

yeah, its being reported in a way that doesn’t appear to reflect the policy described in the article. I've seen headlines saying 'Ukraine - recruits convicted murderers from prison".

But the article above says that murder, rape and drug offences are not included. The main point in the article is if the inmate has less than 3 years left on a sentence, they can apply for early release to enlist. But only if a unit will take them and they pass a fitness test.

Did make me wonder if during the first world war and 2nd if the UK enlisted from prisoners? EDIT, or rather, allowed prisoners to enlist be drafted.

Anecdotally it was regularly offered by judges as an alternative to porridge, 2 years inside or take the king's shilling etc., no idea if it was an official policy or if prisoners already doing time were offered it too though.

Appear we did..

"During the First World War Britain’s criminals were mobilized in much the same way as the rest of society. Courts allowed defendants to avoid prison if they enlisted, while borstal boys, and later adult prisoners, were also granted early release. Although enlistment offered a chance for rehabilitation, criminals were also desirable due to their violent nature, and enlisting them reduced the cost of imprisonment at a time of straitened economic circumstances. How the war was interpreted and later remembered left little room for the inclusion of criminals, which effectively removed them from the collective narrative."

My Father in law was offered the choice of joining the army or prison for a load of petty offences in ireland in the 50s/60s. Did a tour in the congo and a stint at Jadotville before the Siege.

Using criminals and those on the margins of society is nothing new, it’s certainly not reserved to the Russians etc.

“Got in a little home town jam so they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land to go and kill the yellow man.”

“Volunteered for the army on my birthday
Draft the white trash first round here anyway”

rofl What a tragic parade. How ignominious for little Volodya to have a parade that's even more silly than Kim The Fat's.

Imagine if someone popped “Putin” off, i.e. one of the three or four they believe that exist, the real one plus however many duplicates.

That would be a dilemma, wouldn’t it ?

Admit there is more than one ?

Chance to get rid of them all….

I bet the various agencies around the world can tell exactly if a double is used just by running footage through their software.

I'm not sure. If the twitter people who are domain experts can't be 100pc sure I guess nobody can.

Pah, it would be dismissed in best Pythonesque manner as ‘nothing but a flesh wound’… only for the next doppelgänger in the cupboard to be wheeled out

I'm sure I recall the MOD intelligence updates on X said a while ago that there was no evidence of Putin using doubles.

Looking forward to this years effort at a victory parade tomorrow. Time to polish up those ICBM's Vlad!
Apparently, it's ICBMs, some trucks and a lone T-34 - as well as some captured western kit.

The captured western kit is probably in better working order than the ruzzian stuff smile .
Its an interesting phenomenon, the defeat of the Nazis, painting Zelensky as a Nazi. But Russia today ticks every box of a Nazi or Fascist state?
As others have pointed out, its the painting of History the way you want it to be is easier if no one alive was there. Stalin had the Leningrad leaders eliminated in 1948 and they wiped the hq off the land as Stalin didn't like losers. Only in the 80s did they rebuild a museum in Leningrad.
This idea that because you are Russian, you are naturally stronger and will win in the end.
Its worth noting how Russian women view this. They won't be fighting and they will look at others in the room before this affects them in any way.
