Charcoal starter takes 10 mins and you're away.

Get the weber
Damn right, this is PH, Barbecuing matters. Charcoal is where the real men are. wink

To be fair - their gas bbq's do have a good reputation, surprised you had to build that much of it though
Haha, a charcoal kettle? Might as well do it properly over an open fire with oak and apple wood! Seriously though, it doesn't have to be either or - a gas grill is handy for quick lunches and week day meals or if you're catering for large crowds.

Nonsense, one of the greatest things while drinking with friends is throwing the odd slice of steak or a sausage on the bbq, with charcoal you often have to cook in bulk and then everyone is too stuffed to drink beer. With gas the eating and drinking can commence all evening as and when people are hungry.

I do sometimes use applewood when I have spare chunks lying around. I see why people have gas BBQ's but I prefer to err slightly more towards the stone age if I am ignoring the thousand I have spent on decent kitchen appliances.

mankind spent many years improving cooking and came up with what we have in our kitchens today, it doesnt satisfy my inner caveman if if BBQ on gas wink

Depends how many people you're cooking for, but I've loved having my tabletop Berghoff BBQ. It's great for a quick BBQ with 2 or 3 people.

And after eating, remove the grill and you have a tabletop firepit.

Yep….
Master touch Premium here, with only fire Rotisserie plus a few other bits.

Used it Xmas day and even did dinner on it last night…

I bought a Grillstream Gourmet 6 Burner hybrid a couple of years ago which I'm quite happy with.

As the name suggests you can use gas or briquettes. It has a steak side burner, can accommodate a pizza stone, has decent grease/oil management, and double grills to reduce flame outs.

It has a couple of bling features like light up knobs and a built in bottle opener. There's some sort of digital thermometer now too.

I quite like the convenience of being able to knock up a couple of steaks during the week, and then once or twice a year using briquettes if we're having a get-together.

That's where it is false economy. Our Webber is 12 years old and has no issues, other than it's dirty. Lives in the garden 24/7. Previous barbecues have lasted less than 5 years before rust etc sets in and they need to be chucked.

I think you need some cooling ducts to your wheelbarrow brakes

I know this is probably sacrilege but the best piece of outdoor kitchen equipment I have bought recently is a Simogas Rainbow 70 electric plancha. You can cook literally anything on it, its really controllable heat wise and you can get really professional grade results on it because of that. From burgers to pancakes, steaks, fish, vegetables, stirfry, fried rice etc. It's really easy to clean, electric to no hassle of going to restock gas bottles, zero smoke so its very social. I cook on this every day, often twice a day in summer. I know that even if I had a gas grill then it would still be an event to put something on the grill.

I pair this with my Traeger Ironwood 650 which is also great, but I bought this knowing that the marketing they spout of a "do everything" grill was complete bullst. The Traeger is like an outdoor oven. Also really controllable, very precise, and the smoker aspect is brilliant. Makes everything a doddle, and smoked fish is perfect.

If I was buying a grill with all the benefits of gas but none of the downsides (cleaning mainly), I would buy an Everdure HUB. It has self starting which is excellent. It also has adjustable height grills, and a rotisserie. Only downside is it doesn't have a lid, but I don't think thats a downside unless you want to do long cooks, which is pointless on a gas grill anyway.

The people saying that weber charcoal starters take 10 mins are lying. It's at least 25mins for it to be completely ready. I have one of them with a kettle for grilling at the lake and at nearly 20 years experience using weber grills. They are good for what they are and you can get some great results, but they require work to get really excellent food from. Yes you are up and running for 150 quid, but it isn't the be all and end all of bbqing that pistonheads likes to make out that it is.

I got a gas bbq that you can use charcoal on as well, so easy for a mid week dinner, but can also get some good flavour, when I can’t be bothered to fire up the kettle bbq.

We've got a 57cm weber for when I want to faff around.

A cheapo gas one for when we want some quick outdoor grilled food.

And I'm really really hankering after an electric ninja woodfire at the moment...
