Poor Archie

Poor you as a family.

Our first dog was a rescue collie.

She had her moments but we loved her dearly

I am tearing up here

I am so very sorry to hear the news about Archie.

I will greatly miss the photos of him on here, he always seemed to be having a whale of a time. When you can, comfort yourself with that, and what a wonderful life you gave him. Sending virtual hugs.

Likewise. We get our dogs on loan, and not for long enough. The mutual love and loyalty, given and received...truly special.

So after yesterday’s episodes I was hoping we could get through to tea time and reassess, however, despite the cone, waking up to a kitchen and dog covered in blood we’ve had to make the hardest decision ever. We can’t let him carry on forever tasting his own blood, it’s a situation that’s not going to get any better so at 5:40 this afternoon he’ll be making his final trip out the car.

I cannot begin to tell you how much in bits I am over this - life truly is hard and this is affecting us more than I ever thought it would. Archie is and will always be the best friend I’ve ever had and I will miss him greatly.

The first and last pics are just about 12 years apart.
This was difficult to read, absolutely heartbroken for you mate. My wife and I had to make the hardest decision ever with our Blue Merle BC, Maddie, 6 weeks ago, I'm still far from over it.

Hopefully your collie boy has met up with my collie girl on the other side of the rainbow bridge and they're having a hoot together.

Best wishes to you and yours.

Archie looked like he had the best life being loyal to your family until the end. What a dog.

First of all, thank you all so much for your kind words - even if they do keep tipping me over the edge, they mean so much. We’ve had a succession of Archie’s friends and relatives round to make a fuss over him, something very much appreciated by both him and us - I mean, what dog doesn’t like being made a fuss of?!

But we were all aware of time ticking by so when everyone had gone we took him down to the beach so he could have one last run in his favourite place. It might have been raining but it was wonderful to watch him running in and out of the waves and digging in the sand. It was somewhat fitting that it was practically empty, with maybe only a couple of dog walkers in the distance.

So it was then off the vets, which we’d been dreading all day. The vet was kind and caring and did what he had to do while I cradled Archie in my arms and remembered with him all the adventures we’d been on. My wife and daughter comforted him too as he slowly and peacefully slipped away. We didn’t leave him on his own though, he had his favourite teddy under his paw that he’d had since he first came home in 2012. It was my son’s, and in the end the only toy that survived all those years.

And now he’s at peace, and at the weekend we’ll scatter his ashes on Exmouth beach and remember him forever.

Run free Archie you beautiful, beautiful boy. Run free.
