Bear with as I'm new to this.

I have a BA Amex card and have manage to acquire my first companion voucher and have around 65k avios points.
Looking to take the wife and daughter to NYC around christmas and just checked the prices with using some avios and my voucher. All in its coming out a whooping 1,400 pound.

A quick look on sky scanner, the same flight on there is coming out at 1,100 pound.

Am I missing something here??
Did you look using the reward flight link? You can search for flights and use a voucher/points to pay

Two Prem Amex cards are costing the best part of a grand these days with £300 fee each and lost cash back on the spending. I’ve got one, just not yet fully convinced it’s worth it, unless you’re absolutely hung up on flying club.
I guess there is two ways of looking at it. If you were going to fly club/biz anyway, then it will work out cheaper. Or if you usually baulk at paying the cost of club/biz but fancy trying it, this gets you there a bit cheaper.

Personally I have never been a fan of cash back as it's not as "satisfying" as getting much cheaper flights, but each to their own. I used to have the IHG Prem card, and that was great as got plenty of free night stays, plus it got me the Diamond Elite status which means free breakfast wherever you stay, and at places like the IC Park Lane that comes in as a big saving.

This is why I have got on it. I would never ever have spent £2400 on a business return, 170,000 avios + £900 in fees for 2 people is far more appealing, despite monetarily the cost probably being very close!

It depends how you acquire your Avios and what they're worth to you.

I use a baseline of 1p per Avios for assessing the value of using them in comparison to a paid ticket.

Whilst these schemes are aimed at all, frankly they are not of great value to most. Where they do come into their own however is for the business travelers. Especially those where you pay for flights & claim back later.

Many of my million plus Avios have come from business travel. Business class flights with BA where I pay on my BA AMEX & claim back after. Add in the BA Exec club status, which, I think doubles or triples, the earning & it all adds up very quickly.
