Looking to go to celebrate a friends 50th. Will be 6/8 of us.
Has anyone booked through a travel firm to make it easy?. Flights/accommodation/entry/ etc. A 1 stop shop.
Any suggestions welcome as its hard enough to get everyone together to the local pub let alone something like this! Thanks.

Good luck unless you have deep pockets, we had to stay in Nuremberg and get the train down as flights and hotels in Munich were through the roof!

Might be worth looking at Ingtolstadt for hotels, it is only 40 minutes from Munich by train. Oktoberfest 2024 starts on Saturday 21st September.

I'd also suggest looking south of Munich in towns like Deisenhofen, Sauerlach, and Holzkirchen. All three are on the S3 line which goes into central Munich. Hotels should in theory be less pricey when compared to locations closer in.

Those towns are also easy to get to from Munich airport as well. Just take the S8 to Ostbahnhof (Munich East) and then hop on the S3 line south.

I lived in Munich for five years and the public transit is incredibly easy to use.

Done it 3 times. In a previous job I was a road warrior so I had a st ton of Marriott points available. I used these for Oktoberfest hotels getting a great deal. Last trip I ended up in a st hotel near the Hauptbahnhoff at 400 EUR a night...

I think in balance I'd pay the money to stay in Munich. Means you can go for apres-fest beers with people you can meet earlier (my mate met his wife at the Oktoberfest in 2012!) and it saves travelling around when totally trollied.

It's probably expensive, but I always used to stay in the Eurostars Grand Central in Munich for work. Great hotel with good facilities which is pretty central (Hackerbruke station). The Marriott joints are near the Ostbahnhoff.

I've never booked the organised tours. We just book flights / accommodation and go from there. Tent wise, we tend to just get there *EARLY*. Weekend - 10am. Week, 12pm. If you do this, we've never failed to get in. That said, it's a brutal schedule - especially on day 2 with a bhing hangover.

Other advice is to tip well, my last trip was now a decade ago where a beer was 10 EUR or so. We had a group of 4 of us, so a round was 50 EUR). I imagine now this is more like 60-70 EUR. It's not cheap...

Do what I did: combine it witha a avisit to the bmw, porsche and mercedes museum, dachau and the Deutches museum.

Dont do what I did: arrive at lunchtime, have a few, go back to the hostel to sleep it off, wake at 10h30 and miss the ending of the last night.. biggrin

Ha. The beer is around 6% or so and you're necking litres of the stuff.

Get a few chickens and pretzels to keep you going. Radler / soft drinks is possibly an option depending on the group you're with.

Something I forgot to mention earlier - do not mess with the security guys. They used to be a bit harsh. Maybe it's changed, but they were pretty rough with drunk tourists. Watch out for pick pockets too. Tipping your wait staff will mean they'll put up with more st from you and be less likely to kick you off your table - you will only be served if you're sat at a table.

And just don't go near the helter skelter. I went ass over on the travelator after a day of drinking once...

Good point, one of our mates lived in Munich at the time and became quite an expert with the local beer festivals and drinking culture. At the time it was €10 a beer and €1 tip per beer every time was considered fair by locals.

You can tip slightly more if you want to be served quicker.

We went to Salzburg in September 2017, which coincided with their Oktoberfest. I am a bit shocked by the prices quoted on here for hotels and drinks, so I looked at a menu for a popular place we went to and you can get a .5L beer for around 5 Euros.

The 3 star Hotel Astoria, where we stayed would be £130 per night, with a decent breakfast.
The Salzburg Oktoberfest is IMHO far less chaotic and more pleasurable than the Munich one.

It’s not the same scale but the Spring festival Frühlingsfest is bloody good fun without the gouge of Oktoberfest.

+1 for this. I've done the spring festival twice (including once for my dad's 70th during which he broke his shoulder...).

Smaller, but very similar to the main Oktoberfest.
