02 996 facelift, 20K miles when bought and it had its RMS changed a few K prior. Drove it (like it should be!) for just under 10K miles over 11 months and was absolutely faultless, barely even used a drop of oil.
Would have no qualms about buying another and plan to when the finances allow (likely to be a while given a recent deposit on a new house!). Would possibly go for a 996 GT3 or possibly a 997 though!

Still smarting from when I slagged off 993’s then?
Rather than picking holes in my rubbish English, why don’t you try and post something of interest, I suppose it’s an easy way to undermine somebody without actually putting a point of view across.
Makes a change from your monthly self indulgent 993 wank fest, I guess.

'99 C2 ... Ran it for 18 months , daily driver , started with 43k miles , sold last week with 56k miles. way more reliable than my previous 320ci. Had the rms done in Feb under warranty , if I hadn't had the warranty I wouldn't have bothered my arse putting a new thingy in ... Just a couple of oil drips on the driveway now , to remind me of the best car I've ever had ... Sniff...
[quote=Gazboyhe ran two threads simultaneously, ones for rebuilt sixes, and ones that have never been a problem, more people posted they hadn't had a problem. Unfortunately some people still had their fingers in their ears
[/quote]
An observation though: you mention that more people said they didn't have a problem, but that still leaves the odds to say 40/60. From what I have been reading for the 996, it's even less, but that doesn't mean that it's not still too high. My guess about the 996 is that about 70/80% have had no problem, and 30/20% have had a failure. In production cars language, such a percentage for engine failures (nothing less) is mindblowingly high.

I asked this question what is RMS a couple of years ago and was ignored ****.
Subsequently found out its the large diameter rubber seal at the back of the engine that keeps the oil in the sump but allows the crank to poke its nose out to drive the clutch, called Rear Main Seal.
In cars i have owned they have always weeped a bit but these must gush out almost as fast as you put the oil in.

Nope ... The most oil I've ever seen (courtesy of Wetpipe!!) coming from an RMS was a few drops a day ...An RMS leak has never been known to kill an engine , personally , I feel that Jap cars and their insanely dry seals have ruined peoples opinions on oil leaks ... Forchrissakes it's just an iddie biddie few drops of oil that folk keep bangin on about...Subsequently found out its the large diameter rubber seal at the back of the engine that keeps the oil in the sump but allows the crank to poke its nose out to drive the clutch, called Rear Main Seal.

And for the record , 964's got em , 993's got em , GT3's got em , Turbos got em , and they (all to a lesser extent it's true) suffer from weepy seal syndrome.

Japanese cars, pah. My old Nissan Primula had a leaky SMS (well the daft sods turned the engine sideways) for well over two years.
.. And did you give a sh1t?? .. I'm guessing no , as Gruffalos are real men.
I honestly think this leaky seal worry syndrome is going to die a death within a short few years when the first of the 996's can be bought for £15k and are being driven by folk who what to get in the car rather than lie under it polishing bits.
If you want to stop worrying about your RMS , just park your car on a gravel drive ..
Now back to the thread ... It really would be very lovely if everyone logging on with a 996 posted about their engine's reliability .
The only downside to this type of thread is that folk log on to PH in the first place for advise , if their engine gives out ... There's loads of 996 owners out there who are so bored with their cars reliability , they couldn't be bothered their arses posting about it.

2004 C4S Tip 25300 miles
Intermediate shaft failure at 25200 miles.
Brand new engine replaced FOC.
Other than that no other problems in the 15 months I've had it.
Brilliant OPC support.
You've only done 100 miles since you got it back!!!??Intermediate shaft failure at 25200 miles.
Brand new engine replaced FOC.

Great! Hardly any problems at all.. Intermediate shaft failure at 25200 miles.

I should think you would get brilliant OPC support since the engine has blown up on a 3 year old car.
For the record 2003 C4S manual, 25k, 3 RMS failures.
