Done it 3 times in a manual 997s cab. Roof down on the mountain passes etc is so much better.
It's my wife's car and I rarely drive with the roof down in the UK, but in Europe it was rarely up.
It's had a bit of work though - from new suspension to 4.1 engine - so is a bit like Trigger's broom.
Fab car though.

Porsches are ?? what you want is a V10 to rip through tunnels and echo through valleys and off mountains. Hood up the car is well insulated but bonus of being able to drop the rear window to still listen to the engine. Rides well, good tech and reliable.
Best engine since the E46 M3, and a perfect choice.

I had a 1st generation Plus, which was spoiled by the non-adjustable sports suspension, but the later cars are wonderful.

Having had various 911s and now a 981 Spyder I’d take a 718 or 981 Spyder. And regularly do.

A 718 Spyder does seem to be the top choice (imo). Not too big, relatively light, a good amount of power, looks great, screamer of an engine... Although it is at the top of my budget, which requires some thinking about. What are residuals like?
I also quite like the idea of a 996 or 997 GT3.

I really don't think there's much in the way of direct competition for any of these cars?

Residuals good. Or get a 981 Spyder for <£70k. Residuals also good.

My choice would be a porsche 992 PDK any variant. If it was a pure driving holiday I would take a manual.

I'd have a 4.0 gts boxster over a spyder

In the f type we can put hood upon move as soon as weather turns- in a spyder its a faff

Porsche might be the right answer but it’s also a boring answer. You’ll just be joining a line of other British drivers wherever you stop who all made the same choice. Excellent if you want to be part of the club but there are so many more interesting choices available with some great ones suggested above IMO.

…..from someone who has done plenty of European road trips in a Porsche.

A porsche might be the boring answer but if one is actually definitely going on a track several times, they are better at coping than any other heavier option.

An Evora or Emira would be excellent alternatives (but you would have to take bolt-on silencers for some of them!).

The Alpine and 4C would be excellent as well except a manual box would be an absolute must for me for a big Euro trip. Thus, a late fast Elise and v6 exige would be on my list too - AC and cruise control available.

Sub £50k gets you this 981 GTS Boxster, hard to better as a do everything roadtrip car. (Cruise Control is an easy upgrade for £500 from a number of the indy specialists, and I'd agree it is "essential").

Next step up would be an R8, bigger stretch on the budget though.

I had cruise added to my 981 for less than that by an OPC!

It really isn’t! It’s part of the fun/theatre. 45 seconds max. Always feels special.

Feels special doing ours on the move when the heavens open, less so parking up and getting drenched doing it

A Maserati Gran Cabrio MC. I think it ticks all of the boxes on your original list. Boot space is limited, but that's what the rear seats are for. I've done 650 miles in one day in mine, and felt like I could have done another 650. It's a very comfortable place to be. It's not the fastest, or the most dynamic, but it's a magnificent cruiser. Update the infotainment to give you Waze and you're all sorted.

Yeah - ok, I missed that bit. When he said a visit to a racetrack, I took that to mean popping into the visitors centre, I didn't spot "capable on track". Please ignore my first post.

Although.....

I'm not sure I'd be taking a car on track that I was then planning to do several '000 miles in when I was nowhere close to home or any garage I know and trust and also with potential language issues.
