looking at a bmw 520d touring 2014 (sept) but how to tell what engine code it is ... ? Obviously the B47 from what I've read is the preferable one ?

Thanks

They're both fine engines - as already said on one of your other posts, due diligence is key and knowing the engines has had a great SH is what's paramount, with decent/sensible oil & filter changes etc

Use Google Images to understand the visual differences between the engines - but you'll find the last of the F11s got the B47 - the 2014s will highly likely be the N47

Just a point,do you really want to spend money on a Euro 5 not Euro 6 Diesel with all this climate change crackdown.

I think you’ve already asked this question-or had it answered in several similar threads. Some people suggest the N47/B47 are probably okay. Others have the opinion that all N47 and lots of B47s are quite unreliable.
If you want one maybe go for a good warranty.

This

IMO if you can get one under 100k miles and under 10 years old; get the extended fully comp BMW warranty; worth its weight in gold IMO and gives you peace of mind even if you only have it for the 1st 12 months

However; if you're unsure re the 520D and believe too much in all the negatives feedback; then think you'd be best off with another engine
