Ha!! My brother has a photo he took of 50 024 catching fire down on the Southern.... I think it was withdrawn soon after. No sign of your two quid in the pic though...... ;-)

Having said that, during my time at Old Oak (1983-85), 50 024 was one of ours and a good performer on the old Oxford and Newbury commuter jobs.... if I remember rightly, we had 50 023 - 50 040 on our books at the time, all recently refurbished and all thrashed daily.

If anyone else in in tonight because of the snow, Sweeney double bill on ITV4 now.

"Stoppo Driver" (Grey Jag S type and Benny from Crossroads smile) episode followed by "Sweeney!" the 1977 full length film.

It was on at 9pm on a Monday as far as I can remember, and was allowed to stay up to watch it.

It was then all the talk in the playground the next day!

IIRC MASH was on Beeb 2 around the same time, as well as Alias Smith and Jones.

It all comes flooding back doesn't it...? Weekday early evenings it would be What Ever Happened To The Likely Lads, The Goodies, Porridge, Warship and World In Action with that really downbeat organ music at the beginning. Kenneth Kendall, Robert Dougal or Gordon Honeycomb reading the News depending on which of the three channels you were watching. I can remember the power cuts kicking in just as we sat down to watch Magpie at tea time as well.

Watched Sweeney ep 'Big Brother' last night, another good one from Series 2 ;o)

That's another question.

Magpie or Blue Peter?

I watched of the 1978 episodes the other night, which led to me grabbing this issue. Good feature on the Consuls restoration.

Been addicted to all of these over the past couple of weeks, never really watched them at the time (too young) or since really to my shame.

Up to series two with the dark episode with Patrick Troughton. Nasty!

Great stuff! thumbup

The theme is out there but the longer version is brilliant.

I think the Matt Berry version is even better

Thanks, I enjoyed that wink.

I'd completely forgotten starting this thread all those years ago, here's some more Sweeney nostalgia - in the pilot episode 'Regan' John Thaw drives a dark blue Mk1 Consul and wears a cravat...

RIP Tony Allen, Dennis Waterman, John Thaw and Garfield Morgan...

Diana Dors was mentioned earlier - her husband Alan Lake played a wrong 'un alongside Ian Hendry and Brian Blessed in the first episode 'Ringer'...

Alan Lake appeared in the first episode of the first series, and Diana Dors appeared as the fearsome Lilly Rix in the first episode of the last series smile

Hendry had a right villains face and voice didn't he. If he didn't exist someone would make a villain caricature just like him

Loved the Sweeney.
When I was a kid it was always a strict 9.30 bedtime,so I only ever saw half an episode,or the first half hr of a great film !
I used to sit with my dad and watch a bit of telly in the last couple of years ,he had dementia, but really liked the sweeney and minder.

I was allowed to stay up and watch it with my dad when I got to about 12ish, I remember a few of us from school went to see Sweeney 2 at the cinema. A great scene being a young boy in the 70’s was the part where they are all watching some gangsters moll bird stripping off in a video.

Apologies to the mods if the video isn’t suitable, it’s NSFW but very tame compared to these days.
