Dawn French is a Huge tt at the London Palladium.
I know she was well loved back in the Vicar of Dibley days but I found this show only mildly (and even then only rarely) funny and a bit of a strange show to be headlining at such a high profile venue.

In summary - meh.

Not recently, but I did go to th theater to see the Book of Mormon, twice.
Th first time Josh Gad played the role of Arnold, which was a treat. My sides were hurting the next day from laughing so much.

When we go to the theatre, I ask Mrs V. how much she paid for the tickets. If it's less than £50, I go to sleep.

I have been called out on it at some improv show by a couple of members of the cast.

Strange criteria for determining your level of interest smile

I also went to see Wagner's "Das Rheingold" at the Royal Opera House at the end of September. At the prices charged, I bloody well ensured I stayed wide awake.

Not that falling asleep would have been a problem, it was excellent. I'm up for the full "Ring Cycle" now. And it's really obvious where J R R Tolkein got his inspiration.

I have no interest in going to the theatre, watching films or TV. The only reason I go is that I'm the chauffeur and wallet at the for the pre-theatre meal. biggrin

We often go a bit.

Seen a few things. Another vote for Book of Mormon, very funny indeed. Pretty Woman was good. Mamma Mia was good. Miss Saigon was pretty good. Shrek was brilliant. Avenue Q (sweaty Muppets) is funny.

We saw some ballet version of Cinderella which was awful. Shawshank Redemption was awful - actually like a bad school play.

I'd like to see the Back to the Future stage show.

That's a pity.

My problem is that I don't go to the theatre enough. I much prefer the vibe you get from live performance.
I am a musical theatre fan so admit I am biased.

I will make a new year's resolution to get to more live theatre next year.

Another one for The Book of Mormon. Not as risque as I was lead to believe.

Rheingold and the rest of the Ring are always a winner. I've seen the entire thing a few times now, and will undoubtedly do so again smile

Recently, Mrs Magnum & I went to the opening night of Carlos Acosta's "Black Sabbath, the Ballet". Utterly brilliant, especially as for the opening night we got an appearance from Tony Iommi as part of the show. As someone who loves both Ballet and Black Sabbath, a total winner of a show.

Operation Mincemeat. I didn't understand how a WW2 deception plan could be turned into a musical. A funny one, at that. I was very happy to be proved wrong.

And the bar serves Fleming Martinis in a decent glass, which can be taken into the theatre. Excellent start to the show.

I'd always wanted to see Judi Dench on stage so O/H decided to treat me to a weekend in London at the same time. Unfortunately the play was Madame de Sade and Dame Judi had injured an ankle so used a walking stick throughout what was a painful performance for both her and the audience; the whole evening was dire.

That was early 2009. I've only been to the theatre once since then, later the same year when we took my parents (both in their late 80s) to a local pantomime and we had a brilliant time, booing the ugly sisters, singing along, laughing our heads off at the occasionally risque jokes; all four of us enjoying being little kids again.

Basically any story can be turned into a musical. I've performed in way more musicals than I've ever paid to watch and it is amazing how wide musical themes can be -

The rise of the Nazis and their gradual impact on German culture - Cabaret

The trial of two female murderers in the 1920s (based on a true story) - Chicago

Family clashing with and then escaping from the Nazis - The Sound of Music

Two show producers trying the generate a loss making show - The Producers

A boy trying to get a ban on dancing struck off a small town's bye laws (based on a true story)-Footloose

The War in the Pacific - South Pacific

I was brought up loving the theatre and still do, I've seen shows all over the World, from Broadway to Singapore and more in the West End that I care to remember.

Most recently I saw "The Play that went Wrong" and I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in a theatre in my life.

A few years back I took my Goddaughter to see The Woman in Black in the West End as she was studying it for GCSE.
It was her first time at the theatre in many years and she was absolutely mesmerised, it's always magical seeing how kids react to live shows.

Favourites that I've seen recently include Mary Poppins in the West End (with the amazing Petula Clark as the bird woman) and Kinky Boots on Broadway just before Covid.

Favourite show of all-time is Joseph though, I've seen it in excess of 20 times over the last 35 or so years, everyone from Phil Schofield, through Jason Donovan, Lee Mead and loads of amateur productions.

I remember my old college days, when a trip to the theatre involved sitting in a room watching surgery at a local teaching hospital.

1/10 for laughs.
9/10 for entertainment.
