I don't know much about her, but I always found it odd that she would stand in the same seat her husband vacated given his reason for vacating it.

Except she isn't standing again. On one level, I can see why Starmer took her but it's deeply cynical of him to have done so. She's as righty tighty as they come & toxic history too. Still, the rot at the heart of the Conservative party gets yet another run out, which is why Starmer did it, presumably.

Labour does seem like an odd choice if you've no intention of standing again, why not just be independent?
Those all look like lines that have been texted by Central Office to MPs for them to repeat TBH. That 'coalition of chaos' line dates back to when Miliband was leader, doesn't it?

Seems an odd time to realise it's all bks

No part of the process has changed in the last 20 years, so it still applies.

Having no convictions or reports of postal voting fraud would back up my hypothesis that it is impossible to police, unless you want to claim that nobody even tries to commit postal fraud but would rather do it in person (which is both less efficient and more likely to be caught in the moment).
Except no one finds it at any election at any significant level except for a cabal of right wing loonies who can't shut up about it & in any case, this cul-de-sac of a strand has been overtaken by events. In short, no one is interested in negligible postal fraud when Natalie Elphicke has just goose stepped across the floor.

It's not quite as you both assert, and it involves naughty left wing loonies and naughty right wing loonies at play. Less froth more coffee would be good, no?

Fortunately the second item (below) was 'attempted' but not the first. WHy not check these out.

A Judge has delivered a devastating indictment of the postal voting system championed by Ministers as he found six Labour councillors guilty of electoral fraud. He said checks against corruption were "hopelessly insecure" and accused the Government of being in denial about the risks to democracy.

Five men, including two former councillors, were today jailed for their parts in a failed postal votes scam intended to get a Conservative candidate elected.

It's frothy, man.

Is this the Trumpian line for when Labour win then? Is Sunak going to lead a march on parliament and threaten to execute the speaker, with Robert Jenrick calling a press conference at the local B&Q?

Paid advisory roles or being on the winning side in the House of Lords I would suppose. As the trough looks like it will be taken away from them they will claw desperately for a replacement trough.

In 2022 she supported Liz Truss, in 2024 she wants to join Labour. Seems a rapid change of view for someone in her 50s.

Clearly the MP who's Dover constituency bears the brunt of illegal immigration trusts Labour to deal more effectively with it and considers the Tories to be incompetent.

Ouch...

Conservatives have become “a byword for incompetence and division”. Never thought I would agree with Natalie Elphicke!

'Not sure they'll be happy bedfellows' - Tory deputy chair

Angela Richardson, deputy chair of the Conservative party, has been telling the BBC's World at One programme she thinks the people of Dover and Deal will be "sorry" and "disappointed" that their MP, Natalie Elphicke, has defected to Labour.

They've felt the impact of illegal immigration and small boat arrivals, she says.

Richardson goes on to say more about the reaction of Conservative MPs.

"I was sat next to Jacob Rees-Mogg on the benches, and he said: 'Natalie is even to the right of me'. I am not sure they're going to be happy bedfellows," Richardson continues.

"Labour has just got its first member of the ERG," she says, referring to the Brexit-backing European Research Group of Conservative MPs.

"It is quite extraordinary so there is a level of bemusement," she adds.
I can see why Momentum are annoyed.

I've been listening to LBC on the drive home and there's a mix of opinions on Elphicke.

Plenty mirror mine which is what the hell is Starmer thinking but quite a few also being pragmatic that it's a "hold your nose" one as it sends a message.

I can understand that point of view but I'm not sure it's swayed my own view from what on earth is he thinking.

This is another good day for Rishi
All the hidden trots and communist inclined types are leaving the Conservatives.

This is proving to be a good old sifting out of those not fit to wear the blue rosette

I have seen a few articles now and know a bit more about her, so I would say that MPs still need to earn a living just like everyone else. The seat was gone, even if the Tory polling improves a bit, so she wasn't going to have an MPs salary anymore. She needs a new source of income and has apparently decided this would be the best way to do so. I don't imagine quango jobs are going to be offered to former Tory MPs by a Labour government.
