I think the poster highlighted it with rental motorhomes.

I’ve owned and rented so know the etiquette but rental firms simply show you how things work and then you’re left to your own devices without ever driven anything that big before and with the onerous damage conditions, drive like snails. Same with the toilets. People rent with the idea of stopping for the night here and there and where the road takes you. Unfortunately, without a bit of planning you soon find that you can’t just camp where you like, you’ve filled the toilet and are miles from a proper servicing point so you take the easy, if disgusting option. No respectable owner would do that.

It wasn't such a problem 10 years ago, there were a fraction of the number of motorhomes and very few rental ones. Now there are thousands and pretty much everyone I know has a horror story of an encounter with a motorhome. I think the sheer volume of them is the problem and, even if it is only a small proportion that are causing trouble, they are all getting tarred with the same brush.

If there's one benefit of living here in semi-rural, semi suburban north west Surrey, it's the lack of motorhomes and caravans. There's a road nearby with someone who has a motorhome parked in the driveway. But I can't remember ever seeing one on the road around here. Horseboxes though - that's a different matter!

And yet I don’t know a single person with a motorhome ‘horror story’. I don’t disagree with your original complaint about irresponsible motorhomers, but I have to say I think you’re exaggerating wildly with your comments above and simply don’t believe you when you say ‘pretty much everyone’ you know has a horror story, it’s probably more like one or two people at best.

Sorry but I am simply not "exaggerating wildly" I am lucky enough to live in the Highlands but part of that means coming in to contact with large numbers of motorhomes on a daily basis. Where do you want me to start? My wife who was attacked by 3 people from a motorhome for pointing out how badly they had parked. They were kicking the car and trying to drag the door open to get her out. Or the motorhome who refused to move out of the way for the Doctor despite the flashing light on the roof, or the other one who wouldn't move for a blue light ambulance. The local postie who had to run down the road at a passing place to tell one they needed to let the line of traffic behind them past, and they hadn't got the faintest clue that was what they were supposed to do. Or the neighbour who was told to mind her own business by the man trying to tip his toilet waste into a public wheelie bin. Or the friend who saw someone emptying their cassette into the sea. Or people who have had vans set up on their driveways or the many of us that have been nearly driven off the road by giant motorhomes that refuse to stop at passing places. The people trying to get to Doctors/Hospital/vets who get held up by vans that simply refuse to let anyone to get past on single track roads. The local village hall committee who have to clear the mess left by people tipping their cassettes and damaging the septic tank. You are entitled to your opinion but I don't really care what you "believe" I know what I see on a daily basis and that everyone around here goes through the same every time they go out.

Yes, because your stories are what everyone experiences. All of that is about half a dozen extreme instances, so yes, I still think you’re exaggerating wildly, and no, it’s not what you see on a daily basis either, is it?

In keeping with the thread: people who resort to ridiculous exaggeration to back up their points when people agreed with their points without the need for the ridiculous exaggeration.

Maybe ps off and stop reading the "Things that annoy you beyond reason" then, especially as it seems to annoy you beyond reason? People who want to police other people's lived experience annoy me beyond reason.

It is what what everyone around here experiences and it is something that happens every day, I could have gone on and on with many more examples I simply chose not to. I couldn't really give a stuff what a random person off the internet thinks about something they haven't got first hand experience of dealing with. So sorry I am not wasting any more time arguing with you, I will let you carry on believing you know what everyone else has to deal with.

Enough!
I am annoyed by the direction this thread has taken (not without good reason!).
If anyone else is getting annoyed by a recent post and is considering posting a snarky response, don't. Let's enjoy the weekend.
