Car Noise - Why not Induction?

Chris harris nailed this in one of his V10 M5 videos.
Exhaust noise is for everyone else, Induction sound is for you.
Exhaust noise is OTT and a nuisance, induction noise isn't.
I drive with my windows up 99% of the time so would rather induction noise, as I can actually hear it.
Not sure that’s quite true.Exhaust noise is for everyone else, Induction sound is for you.

Induction noise is pretty loud if you are in front of the car when it is coming towards you.

V8s for some reason seem to major on exhaust - not sure if that's only implementation or if there's something in the cross-plane crank design.
Not all V8s are flat plane crank, most US V8s (until recently) were standard crank, Rover V8 based engines are also standard. To me, a flat plane crank V8 sounds rubbish, just as 2 x 4 cylinder engines sound together. My F348 was FPC, sounds really poor compared to my TVR, Aston, Jeep V8, Corvette or Camaro.aeropilot said:

I've wondered this for some time but why do manufacturers not enhance their induction noise rather than exhausts?
Noise regs......plus pretty much all petrol ICE cars are now turbo'd, and thus there is no straight to atmosphere induction run to have much in the way of induction noise, which is really a forte of n/a ICE engines. The turbo/intercooler etc is situated between the air filter and the inlet tract, so what you are hearing the turbo induction sounds, which is not quite the same thing (in the traditional sense of the meaning)
Yes, its induction noise in the simplest of terms, but its created by very different aspects of the two distinct types of induction system....which is also why they are very different types of sounds.
Now I'm wondering what an n/a car sounds like in the flesh!

The M3 CSL had a bit of induction noise going on
So did the Z4M with the same engine, which may be why so many owners fit an Eventuri or Gruppe M induction kit to enhance it!I've managed to avoid temptation so far because I don't want to drown out the sound of the after-market back-boxes.
I love induction noise because it's so immediate, particularly fun if the engine is very responsive or the flywheel is very light.
My R53 Cooper S makes a brilliant noise with just a K&N airbox and filter. It's on the standard exhaust and when I bought it, I thought I might get an aftermarket exhaust fitted (as they invariably sound great on an R53). However the more I settled in to the car, the less I wanted more exhaust noise. Aside from the occasional growl and muffled overrun noise from the exhaust, it is unobtrusive. I can come and go as I please without disturbing anyone but every time I accelerate a bit I'm treated to the bark of induction and the whine of the supercharger.
Having previously had a Triumph Daytona with an amazing sounding Triumph Off-Road can fitted, I'm not sure I'd want that sort of noise again. I used to switch it off down the street from my house and roll it in when I was coming home late at night to avoid pissing off everyone else in a half mile radius.
