Excitement on the not so new now newey news has subsided a bit, and we are nearly back to normal apart from the mclaren news.
This got me thinking . As per previous comments ,they are beating the factory team. But Ron D said you cant win without a factory exclusive engine, promptly chucking his mercedes engines in a skip and getting the lump out of an old civic plus 500 quid a week from honda.
Also did they always say papaya when bruce was around? I feel like they refuse to say orange due to ron not bullying a £100million sponsorship from the telco orange back in the tech bubble days.

Yes, which led to this amusing incident at the Nurburgring, where race control allegedly doctored the actual lights not to go out, but still send the internal radio signal to the timing system - and half the field went anyway. The suggestion was that the teams were somehow intercepting the start signal and sending it to the cars or drivers. Note that those that moved in the video, all did so at exactly the same time.

I doubt that kind of sophistication was available at that time. Worth noting that this was before the current standardised sequence of 5 red lights on an overhead gantry. Instead it was whatever red/green lights that were already installed at the circuit. I think this would have been too many variables to have had an automated system.

There were allegations of an automatic clutch release in 1999 in use at McLaren and Jordan. Those teams had identified that although the length of time the start lights were illuminated was random, the sensors in the tarmac to detect a jump start always activated at a fixed amount of time before the lights went out. If you could detect the sensor being activated then you knew exactly when the race would start.

The FIA became aware of it during the season and deliberately created a false start at the European GP. In the video linked below you can see that both Mclaren's and Frenzten's Jordan start the race at exactly that same time despite none of the lights going out.

Ron was probably just making the point that having spec and design control of the PU would enable the car to be designed perfectly for it - which is true and will get a better result than a customer, unless the car design is flawed in some way, as we see this season with Mercedes.

When they beat Renault with the Renault PU, Renault had spent several seasons barely evolving their car, the team was a bit of a mess by that point.

I'm not taking anything away from McLaren though, it's not easy to beat your PU supplier - and their in season development his season in particular has been astonishing.

Yes they seem to have really developed fast. Did they get the right guy from Red Bull? Aston Martins seem to have stalled with their red bull guy.
Maybe Mclaren had more strength in depth to realize developments.
I hope Aston catch up to this level but at least Lewis's choice next year still seems the best.

Good on Lando for saying what he thought, he’s entitled to his views and will probably get more followers after what he said.
Seems unlikely. Irrespective of any political views, most people still tend to be anti-rapists.
Indeed. Most people also tend to be anti-war, but would you still feel "honoured" to shake hands with Tony Blair ?

No, I wouldn't.

I wouldn't either. The perma smile irritates the crap out of me!

Lando must have met loads of famous and significant people by this point, god knows why Trump would be seen as anything special.

Perhaps it's because the punters in the stand were mostly applauding Trump and chanting U.S.A. (toothless simpletons..) that the occasion all felt more impressive to Lando?

It's possible he's genuinely so in his bubble that he's unaware that the fellow he was praising has been found liable for rape, etc. Apparently, they did some sort of geography test with him for TV and he was completely unaware that Canada is located north of the United States, and that America was a continent...

Spooky! I just realised that I was eating Papaya on Sunday, whilst eating the other half a few minutes ago. Is that why Norris won? It must be a sign... Maybe I should take up religion, starting with Zoroastrianism?

That's certainly possible. If so, it wouldn't be a bad thing - I know that most people like to know all the latest dirt and scandal, but there's no moral requirement to keep track with it all. I expect he's busy enough and happy enough in his F1 bubble to not have all that much time for the goings on in the wider world.

As for the geography fails.. I actually find that harder to understand! Surely after years of globe trotting he'd have a rough idea how the jigsaw puzzle goes together?!

Actually, pop his old Geography teacher in an F1 car and see how well they get on biggrin

We could use that image as some sort of Rorschach test.

Tell the group your emotions and thought processes when you look at Phil’s brunch, Paul. hehe

I’d guess the real world performance matches the sim stuff so they can develop the car and it works. Several of the other teams seem to come with upgrades which don’t give real world performance. Or maybe it’s the suspension giving a stable platform so the aero is mostly in the same position and works the same way, where as others are bouncing around in and out of the correct aero window.

Interestingly enough I was told of the using the jump start detector method by someone at McLaren who told me it was Renault using it at the time. That video suggests otherwise.
