Middle Lane Drivers, Do they Ever Notice?
Discussion
Saw some old interceptors type clip over the weekend
Lady gets pulled over for middle lane stupidity
Cops explains it all to her, then goes onto say get up to speed on the hard shoulder first
Right indicator on, drives straight to middle lane causing lots of panic etc
Some of my extended family were taught “left lane for lorries and caravans, middle and fast for everything else”
Too thick or selfish to think about others even though long term it would help them

The ones I really don’t get are the ‘active’ outside lane hoggers.
You’re driving briskly along the motorway which happens to be fairly empty. There is a single car in the outside lane. As you approach it, it indicates and pulls over. So far so good. Then once you’ve passed, they indicate again, and pull back into the outside lane.
Why?
Been told not to hog the middle lane You’re driving briskly along the motorway which happens to be fairly empty. There is a single car in the outside lane. I worked with a guy like this, outisde lane is where the big boys / fast cars are, stay there and no one will get in your way type mentality

Way back when I used to do a lot of miles I'd play the orbiting game, I'd overtake them and pull back in to L1, then subtly slow so they would slowly pass me, then I'd speed up a little and overtake them again and repeat until they realised what was going on.
I managed 7 laps of one car once before they cottoned on.
I got slated a few years ago for suggesting and doing this trick.I managed 7 laps of one car once before they cottoned on.
Guess times have changed and it is ok now.

Absolutely brilliant, and noted for my next motorway trip! I managed 7 laps of one car once before they cottoned on.
So I got in the middle lane I front of here. I slowly decelerated down to about 40. Wouldn’t shift in to the outside lane to overtake wouldn’t move to the inside lane.
fking morons. I would so love to be a traffic cop. I wouldn’t give 2 sh*ts if you went past me at 85 so long as you weren’t driving dangerously.
I would take great pleasure in pulling every single middle lane hogger over for every hour of every shift.

Probably because they’re in the “fast lane”. You’re driving briskly along the motorway which happens to be fairly empty. There is a single car in the outside lane. I did about 100 miles on the M5 yesterday and the only MLM I noticed was a Range Rover Sport sat in the middle lane at 60mph, towing a caravan.
A chap in our office admitted to always driving in the middle lane as "it is safer". Apparently most accidents happen when changing lanes, so he would get in the middle lane and just stay there. Odd ....
Try explaining to him that he’s reducing the available road width to anybody passing him by 50%, thereby doubling their probability of having an accident and taking him with them. (Almost certainly factually and mathematically incorrect but will he realise?)
I drove to Wales over the weekend and saw loads of these on the M4. Driving along in the middle lane when the inside lane is empty, probably screaming "Maniac" every time another car creeps by undertaking them at 65 MPH.
I have tried the pull out into lane 3 to over take them and then pull back into lane 1, but none of them ever seem to get it. I don't even mind if you want to sit in lane 2 because you are a poor or nervous driver and can't handle people pulling on, but at least go slightly faster than the people in lane 1.
These are probably the same people who seem incapable of getting up to speed when joining the motorway and try and join at 50 MPH, or just stop when it looks like they might not be able to pull out into a gap.
These are the people that cause accidents, not confident drivers doing 80/85 MPH.

Won’t make much difference to his journey time but it will to everyone behind who’s 3 lane motorway is now a single lane with everyone bunching up trying to pass in lane 3.
And every time he slows, maybe even to truck speeds if ones overtaking another and he still refuses to change lanes, people behind slow slightly more and more until way back people are down to a crawl.
I don’t get what’s so difficult about it. I enter the motorway set my cruise at the speed I want and use lane one until I catch someone slower move out overtake then back, its extremely simple.
Also the people that are cursing at 80 catch a truck in lane 2 and slow right down to 56 even though lane 3 is empty, wait for the truck to pass and move back then shoot off back to 80, why?
That final one really annoys me, when you catch up over a fairly long distance and are passing them at 56mph just their lane clears and they speed up and they match your own speed effectively making you a second rolling road block in the lane to their right. And every time he slows, maybe even to truck speeds if ones overtaking another and he still refuses to change lanes, people behind slow slightly more and more until way back people are down to a crawl.

If you slow down to pull in behind them, they will typically scrub off some speed.
The second M in MLM is moron, for a reason.

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread but just thought I mention my experience.
Twice this happened before to me where a car joins the motorway from the slip road forcing me to slow down to let them in because they didn't observe the traffic. I'm on the inside lane already on the motorway and the other two lanes are empty.
The driver joins the motorway then immediately makes their way to the middle lane while there is no traffic in front of them in all three lanes and maintains 60 mph speed. I'm forced to move two lanes across to overtake them.
So to answer the title, yes there are those out there who are completely oblivious.
If lane 2 is empty why do you not pull out into L2 leaving L1 for the joining traffic? No reason to adjust your speed at all, just your lane. Pull back into L1 when able to do so.Twice this happened before to me where a car joins the motorway from the slip road forcing me to slow down to let them in because they didn't observe the traffic. More mystifying is when the road is empty.
I have seen people enter the motorway and indicate to move over to lane 3 even though there's no one to overtake.
Then I'm behind them in lane 3 and after awhile they notice, move over to lane 2, I overtake and move back to lane 1.
I look in my rear view and they've moved back to lane 3.
Last night on the North Circular dual carriageway a guy in front of me in lane 1 indicates and moves to lane 2 even though there's nothing to overtake.
He then sits there at 30 in a 40 and is oblivious to the jam building up behind him as the other cars refused to undertake.
There's some right cretins on the road. How on earth do they pass their tests?

Hypothetical question.
If the right lane is mostlyr free, and the left lane is full of trucks. And a middle lane hogger decides to set radar cruise control to 85 and just sit in the middle lane….
Does anyone have their journey time significantly changed?
If overtaking increases accidents, is it any more dangerous than weaving in between trucks?
When there is a good length of empty lane 1, you should go back into it.If the right lane is mostlyr free, and the left lane is full of trucks. And a middle lane hogger decides to set radar cruise control to 85 and just sit in the middle lane….

Dropping back into L1 for short stretches only move back to L2 moments later is showing poor judgement.
I agree it’s annoying but hardly mystifying. Or is the confusion rhetorical?
Some people don’t like overtaking. Sitting in the right lane and occasionally pulling left to allow a pass is annoying for others but it means you never have to overtake anyone.
People will choose having a very slightly easier drive over annoying strangers they will never meet.

I don't think they do it consciously they just feel more comfortable around another car. It's a bit like when you park in a relatively empty car park and return to find only one other who has parked right next to you.
