Got it down to £560 but utter nonsense.
That is a good quote for an 80 year old.

I have neighbours in their 80's and they are all paying well in excess of that, and when you see the way they drive it is not surprising.

I would not want to accept their risk as an insurance company.

It should go up at that age. Elderly drivers are a liability on the roads, more so than young drivers

Yes and no. My mother is 85 this year and her insurance has almost doubled but she needs her car, to remain independent and mobile but probably actually drives less than 400 miles a year, never in rush hour or at night.

100% this for my wife's grandad, I'm doing his currently, it's near on £900 this year, he drives Probably 15 miles a week to the shops but it's his independence. Without it I'm sure he'd age far quicker than he is now.

I go out with him regularly to see how his driving is disguised as a lift to the train station. It's not the best I'm not going to lie but it's safe and steady, he doesn't drive at night or weekends or rush hour, normally a wednesday afternoon, creatures of habbit.

A deal with a local taxi firm, or the Uber app on her phone if she's up with tech, and she could remain mobile and independent and spend a lot less than she spends now.

The KSI figures would suggest that this is crap. Yes, insurance rises as you get into your 80s and above, as your risk increases, but rarely gets to the levels of young drivers. Because young drivers are a far greater liability on the roads.

Two renewals due at the beginning of June and the comparison sites have emailed.

(1) Mrs V.'s car down from £230 to £145 - I like looking at the highest price quoted and Darwin came out at £1,300

(2) Mums Jazz - up from £400 to £500 - Again Darwin were highest at £4k!

Looking at another car and surprised that a macan 3.0 turbo 340bhp was the same to insure as a 2.0 diesel e class 209bhp £420 (ISH)

That's relying on somebody else to be there at the exact time you need your car. It really never works like that.

The Ins for my SLK is up on the 1st June. Logged into the Meerkat website and got the message - no one can quote for you car !

This leaves me in a bit of a bind, anyone know of insurers who might quote on a modified SLK55 ?

True, the UK market for satndard risks do not make insurers money where as non standard risks can be very profitable so they are happy to keep the premiums the same, i assume this is your 2nd car and probably low miles??

Several reasons for the increase in premiums, maily due to the new FCA rulings and fair pricing, costs of parts, claims costs, wages, interest rates, war in Ukraine, terrible driving standards, number of uninsured un licenced drivers (someone has to pay their claims) car crime includign thefts, i am sure everyone on here knwos of at least 1 person who has had a car stolen in the last 3 years? Yes i believe Insurers could do a lot more to save money on claims such as the exptortionate rate for hire cars etc and dealing with claims more efficiently but this woudl only save a little.

For those who pay less than £200 premium per year, ask how much a windscreen is for your car and how many premium will be needed to pay for just 1 windscreen. Your premium less the 12 IPT, broker commissions and the insurers runnign costs.... hence premiums are rising

Try it again later
And try another comparison site.
Not every insurer who would have given you a quote will give you a quote every time, maintenance and technical issues can get in the way.

Comparison sites don't tend to work very well for modified cars, so I've never bothered trying them with my BMW Z4M with a few mods.

I seem to alternate between Chris Knott and Alexander Forbes as neither of them seems able to offer a competitive renewal price! redface

I've read positive things about Howden too (used to be A Plan) but I think it's their Newbury office that looks after modified cars. I'll find out next month!

Depends how modified it is, standard insurance will typically deal with common modifications.

If it's a reduced supercharger then you will need to call places or go through a specialist.

Having gone through this for two bikes and two cars recently here are my findings and thoughts...

Me - 44 years old, 13 years No claims for the car, 11 years for the bikes, no claims or convictions living in North Hampshire.

2003 Civic - Retired Dad's car.

Last year renewal price - £167
This years renewal price - 'We're please to offer you a renewal of £380!' Get fked!
Price found when renewing - £200

2000 E 39 M5 - My car

Last year renewal price - £367
This years renewal price - £474 with £750 excess! Fair-ish price but not happy with the high excess.
Price found when renewing - £431 with £500 excess

2005 Monkeybike

Last year renewal price - £51 including breakdown
This years renewal price - £70
Price found when renewing - £60 including breakdown

2024 BMW S1000R Sport

Last years renewal price - N/A Had a 2023 Triumph Scrambler which got chopped in... £165
This years renewal price on the new bike - Ranging from £340 - £550 for a bike!
Price found when renewing - £160 to change current policy for the remaining 3 months...God help me when it's time to renew.

Insurance is a con. They just randomly pick an arbitrary number which is much higher than the last renewal. My mum paid £400 this year when she paid half that last year! But bless her she paid up without much protest-unbeknown to me to my chagrin.

As an experiment I did some quotes yesterday on a price comparison website and found that a 2003 Lambo Gallardo was a tenner cheaper than my renewal on my M5!

Glad it’s not just me.
No, the prices have not increased all that much. People are just being softened up by planted news stories and articles so they expect to get ripped a new one and just cough up.

If you don’t do your homework you get skanked. Enough with the “I’ve tried everywhere and all the same price”.

In which case, can you explain why, from about 2006 to 2018, insurance prices in the UK just kept falling? The average policy price for 2018 was way lower than 2006.

Also, how come, even now, in this period of spiralling insurance costs, some people (not many, I accept) are getting renewals in lower than last year?
