My dad’s house is a fairly standard sized 1970s 4 bed (slightly larger footprint than you’d get on a new build though not vast) but apparently doesn’t have much loft insulation - probably 100mm but I’ll check first. Any idea what the going rate would be for a professional to add additional insulation over and above the materials cost?

I suspect that’s what I’ll end up doing, but there’s a price at which I’d rather just pay someone else to do the work.

When I looked at online prices, it would have been around £1K for our 1930s 3-Bed
Did it myself. Not a job for summer!
I had 1/2 inch of dust (no felt) that I cleared out as well.
A few trips in the Mazda 6 hatch to get all the insulation I needed

Your dad may even get it for free, depending on his circumstances. Search for loft insulation grant.

It is worth checking to see if its possible to get this under the assorted grant schemes. Making the assumption your dad is older than you - if he is in receipt of a pension etc this will increase the chances of this being a goer.
Obviously your mileage will massively vary dependant on where you live and your fathers personal circumstance.
I appreciate you may well have checked this - but it's worth pointing out just in case. The schemes arent as good as they used to be - but they do still work in some circumstances.

Assuming that any grants are means tested, they won’t qualify, as he has a decent pension.
