Hi everyone, I am going to be buying a 635d in the next few days. The particular one is high mileage at 140k it's a 2010 and has full service history with lots of receipts for recent work carried out.

I've changed jobs and now need a high mpg diesel car to do 24k miles a year in. So I've picked something I would enjoy being in for long periods of time daily.

I'm sure it has the same m57 as the 5 series of the same era but just wondered if anyone has and experience of these and what I'm getting myself in for in terms of running costs and maintenance?

I can do basic DIY maintenance and repairs myself.

Please let me know what the servicing schedule and must do mods are on these.

Cheers

I think at 140k you're pretty much past service schedules, so I'd just be doing an oil service every 10k or so and fixing things when they go wrong. Get a diagnostic setup so you can catch things early. Everything else really depends on what's already been done and when.

One thing worth looking at will be carbon build up in the intake. If it's not been replaced or properly cleaned I'd be looking at getting it walnut blasted. I'm just about to do the same on my 2010 640d's N57 and that's at 100k.

I'd also think about a transmission service if it's not had one.

Probably not - the E92 335d is in the class below, but is nearly half the price.

Shame as I have soft spot for them.

They're good cars but I'd be looking for something with less miles considering your annual mileage, how much is the car costing?

I bought a 635d conv 7 tears ago on 35k miles 1 owner bla bla blah still have it and now 124k miles and it is a really great car, need to watch your speed on motorways, but def a good choice.
Tyres are run flats so expensive, had a leak in the roof sill dec 23 which was £700 just for a 2 foot bit of rubber!! but generally that is it. thinking of upgrading to a 640 d gran sport next due to family etc

good luck and enjoy

Is this the twin turbo engine ?
If I recall correctly my well maintained, FSH 335D needed the following between 100K and 140K miles . . all very common on that engine

Inlet manifold cracking
Glow plugs & controller failed (hot oil leaks onto them from the manifold and damages it)
Swirl flaps needed removal and blanking off
DPF blocked and needed a clean
Lower intercooler hose replaced x2
Turbo oil seals leaking
Turbo actuators
Thermostats (x2 I think)
Crank pulley

Great if the car you are buying has had all this done, otherwise plan for them. I don't believe it's a matter of IF, it's WHEN they will go.
