RE: Not dead yet: new Mini Cooper S announced
Discussion
For those of us old enough to remember the 60s / 70’s ladies ‘dresses’ that came in mini, midi and maxi, the original ‘classic Mini was, well, the Mini, the first of the new generation Mini was the ‘midi’ and this abhorration is the ‘maxi’.
Bigger but not in a good way.
Another styling faux pas from the design school of ‘S Wonder & R Charles’, who on earth signs of these things?

I was so looking forward to see the new F66 but what a let down at the front end with no iconic bonnet scoop....and to the rear no visible exhaust so I'm guessing no pops n bangs..
I had pops and bangs on my 2017 model(and rightly or wrongly they did put a smile on my face). But they weren't on the LCI models from the back end of 2018 because of the OPFs I believe. MightyBadger said:
Worst looking mini ever.
Surely that award goes to this doesn't it?Whether a car is attractive or not is down to personal choice but the Paceman is not only ugly in my eyes but pointless too.
One of my neighbours got a huge discount on a new one as they were really struggling to move them when they were new.
At least the Coupe had a wait list for it when new and probably the best of the lot to drive from my experience.

Because when i look at the New Cooper S, the first thing i see and question is the missing scoop. As owner of many Mini's i know only the R53 made use of it. But it was so important a styling feature to set the cooper S above the other models that Mini kept it for 17years after its usefulness was filled in with solid plastic. But no mention or reference to it at all?
I suspect its all cost saving measures, saves having to manufacturer 2 types of bonnet perhaps. As much i loved the scoop on the supercharged model due to it having a purpose, when they shifted to turbo charged, the scoop was redundant. Though as you point out an identifier that the car was the sporty model.I'm sad to see the switches / toggles go from the centre console. I loved those.
Positives: At least this one keeps the signature black rubber elements around the arches that have been there since R53 but are sorely missed on the new electric version. And new small, interesting, quick little cars are few and far between these days so that alone is to be applauded.
Negatives: Everything else
Side note: Not for the first time, I'm thinking that it's tax breaks that are propping up the car industry these days. Without them, who on earth is buying/affording the endless parade of eye-wateringly expensive, ugly, electric monsters? And when I say 'tax breaks' I of course mean 'tax payer-funded give-aways'.
