It also might not! wink

Wouldn’t the dealer have potentially thought of that already rather than losing £1000?

That’s bargetastic

Need to factor in- Is it worth £2/day in tax to have it on your drive?

Yes - it would make a nice little home office smile

The old adage "If it looks to good to be true, it probably is" applies here, it is indeed on AT for a grand with an immobiliser fault, expect its worth more than that in parts, for another Phaeton owner to keep theirs going.

This does look good, nice colour and wheels, bodywork good etc, they look alright in the manner of a Passat thats had a good Christmas but not a car to buy to run on a budget, death by a thousand cuts is a distinct possibility with something like this.

At two grand if it was running, yeah, spin the dice and see how long you get from it, then weigh it in, but looks like its got an electrical issue that is causing failure to proceed, and this isnt trace it with your Multimeter stuff I dont think, its all bespoke for this model, multiplexed wiring etc.

Shame as it does look really nice, and I expect a lovely way to get around, but its got all the hallmarks of something that will sit on the path turning mossy whilst you try stuff and scour forums for "Phaeton immobiliser problems".

Four grand gets you a working one, ten grand in old barge land gets you all manner of lovely things, Jag XJ for example.

THIS is why I log in to Pistonheads every Friday morning - a great article on a very interesting car! There's always a space in my imaginery hangar for a cheap Phaeton (perhaps sat next to a Peugeot 604 or Talbot Tagora). Nice.

Keep up the great work clap

I'm a fan of VAG Tdi's,the fuel of the future I might add biglaugh for 2k if they'd put a fresh MOT on it thats alot of metal for the money,do an oil/filter change, pop a tank of Shell V-power diesel in and a drop of redex to clean the old girl out and spend a few hundred quid on a stage 1 remap for around 290bhp and 435Ib/ft,job done!

Great looking car, and this is a very attractive example.

I was always a fan of the styling, especially the big C Pillar that gave such an impression of solidity. When many manufacturers are throwing creases all over a car, the elegant simplicity of this stands out.

I never had a problem with the badge. It's a car. I'm not buying a badge. Sad for those who lack the self-confidence (or other mental hangups) to see past a badge and embrace the product. Their loss.

Same'ish for me. I think if they'd made it look a bit more distinct from the Passat they might have had more success in the UK with it.

I quite like these but they do look bland and too Passat like to have been a success.

Really handsome car this, and well photographed too.

Apart from Toyota (Lexus) I can’t think of any other mass market manufacturer who had a serious stab at this level....
Honda did it with the Legend but that seems to have died a death too

Yep, the styling definitely needed to stand apart from other VWs and it didn't. I also think there was a distinct mismatch between the cars USP, which was all the little bits of engineering like the windscreen wipers that would come to rest in different positions to even out blade wear, versus their ambition of mass market appeal. Engineering details appeal to a niche, rather than mass market. Loads of people on PH are going to love it for that reason (myself included), but to the mass market it was a Passat that cost more for no obvious benefit.

Didn't this get rebodied and repurposed into the first-generation Bentley Continental?
Not quite, these were built on the D1 platform which was also the Bentley Continental GT (2004-2018) and Flying Spur (2005–2019) plus the Porsche Panamera (2010-2016).

Great shed but major bork factor

Great read - thanks Shed. And what a car to take a punt on.
Is this a record for rate of depreciation from new down to Shed-qualifying levels ?

Why would anyone buy one of these over an A8 or an S8?

For me, the biggest problem was the styling. As the article alluded to, it just looks like a bigger Passat.

Still, at todays prices it's an absolute bargain. Think I'd want the 4.2 V8 though.

The location looks familiar, I feel like we've had various sheds from this seller before!

Great cars though. They just look so... solid!

(Except when they get old and break like this one!)
