Hi,

Just to let you know …..

My November 22 GTS suffered catastrophic engine failure on Easter Sunday.

I have never had to have any vehicle recovered in forty years of driving, so it was a pretty shocking experience.

I knew straight away that things were bad, not the water pump failure suggested by the recovery guys.

My dealer is pushing for a new engine, rather than stripping and rebuilding.

To add to the fun, I will make my third hour and a half round trip in a week to collect my third courtesy car on Monday ……

It really couldn’t be worse, I’m utterly cheesed off!!

Terrible news , do you mind sharing mileage and the circumstances of the failure ?
The car had only covered 6000 miles and had never been tracked - always driven properly, carefully warmed up to normal operating temperature and driven with mechanical sympathy - a brilliant car to drive.

Cruising home at 40mph in a line of cars, I heard a ticking/knocking sound from the front of the engine, so stopped within seconds in a lay-by.

On exiting the car, I noticed a burning smell from the engine. The temperature was its usual 90 degrees though. A yellow exclamation mark was displayed in the instrument cluster.

I knew straight away it was game over - the car was recovered to Porsche and metal fragments have been found in the engine.

I’m currently waiting to hear the exact cause.

Why are you being messed around with courtesy cars - do they keep upgrading you? If it’s handled by Porsche Assist they’re supposed to be delivered.
The original car was supplied by Porsche UK, but apparently charges are incurred after five days. So the dealer, on realising my car would be off the road for some time, gave me one of their own cars (a 2019 Macan, with a ding at the back, missing dust caps, non-matching plates, an empty screen wash reservoir and ACC that didn’t work) which not too surprisingly developed a fault and had to be checked out by another dealer when I was up in The Wirral. They picked up on a brake servo and vacuum issue, and a problem with a headlight. I had already mentioned the long travel in the pedal and the fright I got when I first tried to stop it! So I will be given a third car tomorrow, presumably another Macan.

My car was in showroom condition (unmarked wheels, no dings or scratches) and I worry about its condition on return to me eventually.

Really fed up, reflecting on the wisdom of making such a large cash purchase ….

That made me laugh!!

She doesn’t drive my car though!

Evening.

The servicing dealer have organised a lovely courtesy car for as long as is necessary and are pushing for a new engine for sure.

So no problems there at all.

I’m confident that Porsche will rectify matters, but it really is an awful experience to go through, my ultimate nightmare!

Morning.

Thanks for all the support and kind comments.

Porsche have authorised a complete engine replacement, so I’ll sit back and be patient for now.

It will be like getting a new car when I get it back - do you think I should run it in?!!

😂

Hi!

The running-in comment was tongue-in-cheek - I always treat cars with mechanical sympathy, this will be no different.

Well, the day has come when I get my car back, with a new engine fitted.

The OPC has really worked hard to get everything done right, and Porsche have not been slow to offer compensation.

I will see how the car is later today, beginning the running-in process for the new engine.

Feeling anxious right now!!!!

Evening!

The car was presented like a new car this afternoon, the OPC exceeded my expectations and made my day.

The work done was listed in the documentation - the bill without warranty would have been eye-watering.

Porsche GB gave me decent financial compensation, in addition of course to a completely new engine.

It really felt like getting a new car, made even better by the (very) sedate drive home in lovely sunshine.

I will run-in the engine carefully, gradually stretching it over a couple of thousand miles.

Any suggestions about run-in procedures?

Just when I thought the nightmare was over……

The car, having done only 100 miles since I got it back (to and fro to OPC), developed a ‘refill coolant’ warning light as I went to get it out the garage earlier.

It has no sign of a leak, all confirmed by Porsche Assist - they tried topping up with a fair amount of water and letting the engine warm up, but only cold air came out the vents.

So it will be recovered to the OPC on Tuesday, for the second bank holiday in a row.

I wonder what my fourth courtesy car will be?

Shoot me now!!

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

Topping up had no effect today - we could not get even mildly warm air out the vents.

I’m just fed up now!

I’m beyond panic, just utterly fed up with it all.

This should not be happening, plain and simple.

Courtesy car 4 will arrive tomorrow- even that was a battle - they apparently need to see my V5C, but that was sent back to DVLA informing them of the new engine number, with a covering letter from Porsche.

That sounds pretty normal to me.

Mine gave no indication whatsoever that there was impending doom, failing in fact on a slow drive home on a Sunday afternoon.

My biggest worry is that, apparently, they don’t know exactly what went wrong; that being the case, how do they know they have fixed it??

I doubt very much that having stripped the engine down they will not know what the cause of the failure was.

They may well be keeping that to themselves, knowing full that there is a fair chance that whatever they share could be all over the internet in minutes.
I realise that, hence the 'apparently'.

The second engine developed a low coolant warning within 100 miles (mostly to and from the OPC to restore functionality to an instrument cluster, something they missed...!).

I've yet to hear what caused this warning, but the Porsche assistance guy, incredibly the same one who recovered me the first time, expressed concern about a second failure being about to happen - it could be an airlock in the coolant system, it could be more.

The whole experience has been an indescribable tale of woe, costing me time (lots of time), money, cancelled appointments, cancelled trip to Scotland, ruined holiday weekends (plural) and total embarrassment having to have my as-new Porsche recovered twice in front of my neighbours, both at my previous home and at my new one, where I moved smack bang in the middle of all of this.

So I'm now exploring my options and thinking about how to proceed.

No, the OP said the fans blew cold once the 100 mile issue presented itself, it may well have been working perfectly well when it was handed over.

Small but important difference.
I had no reason to have the fans on - I collected the car on a warm day (Tuesday) and drove it back to the OPC on the warm Saturday.

The fault was almost certainly present on handover.....

It took the something like 120 miles for the cooling system in mine to clear out properly after the cross over pipes were replaced. I drove it home, to Duxford, the got most of the way home before the coolant level flashed up.
Which OPC?
