Gaming at 50 years old

Hi guys

Anyone else started gaming at 50ish.

Havent played any games since Jet set willy on the Spectrum, and decided to jump on my sons Pc whilst he is at Uni.

He has an rtx 2070 , i7 9700k.

im currently downloading red dead redemption 2, any other games that might be good? not to sure about call of duty style though..

Back in the very early 2000s I was actually competitive in Unreal Tournament but that may have been down to the fact that at the time, the age group of people with decent PCs and broadband connections was pretty high.

When I moved back to console gaming on the OG XBox a few years later and tried Halo2 PvP, it was pretty clear even then that I was never gonna be able to compete with legions of teens with nothing better to do than play the game 18 hours a day.

Ever since then, online competitive FPS play has simply been a non-starter for me. I have had some good co-op experiences though.

I'm 50 in a few weeks but have gamed since my childhood 48k Spectrum days. I only play COD these days. There's a few of us at a similar age who play together quite regularly. Be prepared for the "you're too old to game" comments, mainly from women.

45 and started dabbling a tiny bit with an Xbox 360 I was lent a few years ago. Mrs got me a series s for Christmas and now I play a fair bit (mainly Forza Motorsport). I'm fairly incompetent but it's good fun.

Im a similar age. I don’t play online call of duty style stuff. Too fast paced and basically not relaxing. I prefer single player open world style games where you do it at your own pace. I can highly recommend the far cry games and also the Witcher games. I’ve played all the far cry games since 3 and they’re brilliant. Witcher 3 which is what I’m playing now is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Cant recommend it highly enough.

It depends what you’re into really of course, everyone is different.

Totally agree - and the fact you know a game will take no more than about 15mins, so you can always fit in a little session.

I'm mid 50's and have been gaming for a long time.

I have to admit I struggle to find new titles that engage me these days - possibly down to having less patience nowadays to learn the intricacies of a new title.

I am 50, I grew up with the Commodore 64, Sega Mater System, Amiga, SNES and finally PC. In the days of the SNES, on the weekends and school holidays I would start playing as soon as I got up and would only stop playing when it was time to got to bed. The last PC game I played was COD Modern Warfare 2 in 2009, after that the only games I occasionally played were on my phone.

2 and a half years ago I decided to get back into games, I purchased a 3060 based gaming laptop and a Logitech G920. I bought F1 2019, Assetto Corsa, Battlefield 3,4,5 and 1.

At first I played them a lot, I put 100+ hours into F1 2019 and completed Battlefield 3 and 4 numerous times. But then something happened, I slowly lost interest and found I hadn't played any games for weeks. Every now and again I force myself to play something, after about 15 minutes I die/crash, get frustrated and turn it off.

The games these days are incredible, teenage me would have not believed how good games could be compared to the C64/Amiga days. Yet here I am at 50 thinking Meh and cannot be bothered to even play them anymore.

I really wish I wanted to play them, but something has clearly changed in me over the last 15 years.

Games have generally got too complex to easily pick up and play for a quick sessions ... you have to learn a lot to play most of them, even stuff that should be simple.

Even games that I have played intensively, I find that if I go back to them after even a few months of not playing then I have to relearn the control scheme and all the stuff that I can do. That means you have to put deliberate, planned, effort into playing something.

I find that my most played games are stuff that still is pick up and play and can be played in short blasts. Resogun on Playstation is a standout there ... it's pretty easy to get to grips with the controls and gameplay is simple and satisfying even at a basic level. If you want to get the super high scores there is a lot of complexity but you don't need to learn all that to play and have a good time. Even better, I got it free on PS+ (for PS4) and was able to play it on PS3 and Vita, thanks to 'crossbuy' being in effect, before I even got a PS4 ... best value ever. Still one of my most played on my PS5 too.

Not sure I fully agree - you can pick up Stardew Valley or Terraria and be engaged in a couple of minutes. Ditto Minecraft

Grew up on Commodore Vic20, progressed to an Intel with a SX processor..
Throughout the years I've remained a flight simmer off and on. Still got a number of boxes of various generations of Microsoft Flight Sim full of CDs (I chucked the floppy variant ones!).
Number of iterations of X-Plane.
Just got an aging iMac that can dual boot into Windows that plays Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 reasonably well, but it's time that box was going.

Just moved to a Macbook Air M3 thing that only today I tested Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 on Parallels using Xbox Game Pass, but can't use a joystick only a sodding Xbox controller which isn't the same.

X-Plane works well on the Macbook.

Shame I'm banned from my lads gaming rig.. that would be ace to Flight Sim on...

I spent a good 15 minutes last night trying to Google which button press i needed to do to throw a climbing rope in Tomb Raider. These games often just assume that you can remember all the controls when you come back to them after a few weeks.

Having the same issue with at least three games I started and haven't played for weeks, it's a shame but because of that reason i've got no motivation to turn them on again now, might have to start a couple all over again

Turning 50 this month - still play Rainbow 6 Siege a lot on the Xbox. Love shocking the teenagers when I tell them my age.

Even ended up randomly in a squad with a bunch of my son's classmates in a ranked match. Rumours went around the school it was me and the word legend was used

I'm 57 and have been gaming since I got my Vic 20 in my teens. Currently play Elite Dangerous Odyssey (only just bought that), MSFS and various racing sims. I'm also a fan of the Resident Evil games, but haven't played those for a while and have some that I've not even started yet.

At some point I'd like to try and get an Amiga emulator so that I can finally try and finish Zeewolf, so if there are any experts around who can post detailed instructions.......
