Roofing question- can I patch this underlay
Discussion
Can you do what the previous repair has done, but nailing to the battens instead?
Personally I'd just leave it unless water was getting in. My roof is old and tired and will need completely redoing in a couple of years. I'm patching where there's the odd leak, but not bothering otherwise.

even if water was coming in you can fix issues like that with some 2-3mm foamed pvc sheet - no screwing / nails etc required..
cut suitable sized bits to direct any water flow and tuck them under the rafters as required. also make a piece sightly too wide to fit between the rafters so that when it springs out it stays in place.
using a hair dryer it's possible to heat and permanently bend it to any shape you need and they don't lose strength or springiness
