Hi members! smile

Sorry to be piggybacking off this post, but I require some advice/guidance/opinions from the wonderful gentlemen/gentlewomen (and anything in between).

I am in the market of purchasing a BMW M5 F10 (2016 66) with 34k miles and wanted to know if the services carried out on the vehicle is all good or should I be concerned. Atm i dont have the specifics of what has been done during the service as I am yet to go see the car (next weekend) and wanted to be prepared on what to look/ask for.

I’m going to assume the owner stuck to scheduled interval of when it appears on the idrive?

1,196k - 17/01/2017 (Assuming this is the running in service? If so, any issues with it being done 1 year after it has been registered 31 October 2016?)

12,148k - 09/01/2019
12,411k - 06/02/2019
15,971k - 09/09/2019

(Should I be concerned for the almost 3 year gap between the last service in 2019 to 2022? Should something have been done during that period?)

25,438k - 31/05/2022

30,916k - 22/09/2023

33,716k - 08/04/2024

Any help will be appreciated and will give me a bargaining edge!

That running in service is spot on, it's virtually on the mileage and only 2 1/2 months after the car was registered.

The time between the other services is a wee bit concerning.

I'm guessing the 09/01/19 @ 12,148 miles is an oil service which fits in time wise, so it should've had the big service with plugs and air filter on 09/01/21 at the latest.

I think that the 09/09/19 @ 15,971 service could be brake fluid which should be done for the first time at 3 years old, so that almost fits time wise as well. It's then every 2 years after that, so if it was a brake fluid service it should've had another one around 09/09/21.

Not sure what the 06/02/19 service will be, maybe brake pads.

So there are some big time gaps between these 2019 services and the later ones, I wonder if this could be another car that's got services missing from the idrive.

Is this the Monte Carlo blue competition pack car at Stephen James in Bromley you're looking at?

It'll be a shame if it doesn't pass muster on it's service history, it looks lovely and has a great spec.

Those 2 services after the running in service would have me running away.

I bet the rod bearings aren't far from being done.
My cars early service history looks the same as I was doing a lot of mileage when it was new and serviced it strictly on schedule. Granted there was part of me that wanted to halve the oil change intervals, but I was often doing 1k miles per week and figured if BMW underwrote warranties on those schedules that it should be okay.

Probably didn't expect to still have it 165k miles later though smile

Interestingly though, when the rod bearings came out as preventative maintenance at 145k they were very fresh.

I'd probably look more towards the rate at which miles were accrued in its warranty years, and also get a feel for how willingly money has been thrown at it subsequently. Choice of tyres would also be revealing.

Much appreciated for the reply Harry!

So, I did enquire through email with the sales representative and they said the following to me:

“I have done some research on the services carried out by BMW and can see that they were all major services which includes your oil, filters, front and rear brakes, and spark plugs. These services include a vehicle check as well to make sure everything is running as it should be.”

That’s not as helpful as I thought it would be lol. For 06/02/19 I have a feeling it is the Vehicle Check, but I will report back as I have booked a viewing this weekend. I’ll make sure to dig deep into the service history. One thing I have noticed on the listing on AutoTrader is that they mentioned Partial Service, so it makes me wonder if this is reason for the gap?

And to answer your other question, this is not the Bromely branch one, it is from BravoAuto. Now that I have seen the Bromely one I am so tempted for peace of mind and it is literally the same price as the Non-Comp one I am looking at. Thanks for that!!

It doesn't sound like the person selling the car knows that much about them, it sounds as if he's a bit vague on what's been done and if you know the cars it's quite easy to check.

When you go into the i-drive on them there's a section for vehicle status, within that there's a sub menu for service requirements which lists Engine Oil, Brake Fluid, Vehicle Check, Front Brake Pads and Rear Brake Pads. Beside each one of these it'll say how long/ how many miles till the next service for each is due.

At the top of the service requirements section there's the tab for service history. Click on that and it'll list every service the car's had along with the date and mileage it was done, the code for the dealer that carried it out and whether it was done on time (green), overdue (amber) or late (red). Click on each service and it'll tell you what was done, for example oil, pollen filter, spark plugs etc.

I doubt it will have had spark plugs and brake pads at every service, the spark plugs get changed at every second oil service. The vehicle check service is done, I think, every five years, not at every service.

Personally I'm quite risk averse when it comes to buying cars, so faced with two cars the same age, same mileage and roughly the same price, one at an independent dealer, the other BMW approved used, I'd go for the approved used car every time. I think it's worth it for the warranty alone.
