Guardian reporting Andy Street is 21,000 votes up with Coventry and Sandwell still to declare. 21,000 seems a lot to overturn given the turnout and enthusiasm for these elections, even though Cov will likely vote for the Labour candidate. Especially so as in Birmingham, a much bigger area, the votes were 80,000 vs 66,000. To win by 21,000 across 2 small area's seems unlikely. Sky News had a tory on who said that he'd either won or lost by a small margin. Lost is the word he'd lost.

Mentioned earlier that Street is a decent Mayor for Birmingham, he deserves a second term in my view but if it happens it will have nothing to do with the party in Westminster. Street has worked hard to distance himself from Sunak and the Tory party so it will be interesting to see the reaction if he hangs on, but whatever, this is the Rishi thread and he must be feeling beleaguered now. I wonder if he will be tempted to run and get it over with?No one wants to lead the Tories into the next election, staring inevitable defeat in the face. Rishi can be sacrificed allowing Cons to slip into the shadow role for a term, and will come out battling with some new faces. Labour should win this one convincingly, however a lot of people are asking the question, "What do Labour stand for?" I think they will gain a lot of support simply because ABC but if they're weak in govt, I don't see them making an easy 2 terms.

It's odd. All the tories I've seen commenting on this specific vote have suggested that it would be some kind of lifeline for Sunak. I would have thought the opposite was true due to the fact that Street didn't mention the tories in his electioneering. He's almost an independent. I would say that a Street win, or close loss, would condemn him even further.
I don’t think it would condemn him at all, they will do what they have to in order to present it as a positive. I think we sometimes forget that most people are not so engaged, to those who follow these things a Street win is no big deal. Grundian....
