Out of interest, where's that figure coming from? And I presume that's a long block?
When the 4.0 was first released and had the engine 'issue' I was shown the invoice for a new 4.0 that was being fitted into the OPC 4.0 demo. It was £37k for the crate engine.
That's the retail price. The engine, excluding the after-treatment, will be likely around £4k to Porsche to make. I used to work for an OEM that would do a minimum 5x mark-up on service parts - I know that Porsche have some of the highest margins in the industry so ~10x isn't all that suprising.

Note, the funny part is that the internal warranty spend metrics will be done based on those inflated prices, so if you have a big issue it becomes a BIG issue if your department is where the root cause is found to be. Quite silly - it's wooden dollars.

I guess any new model will have teething problems . As long as Porsche puts it right it's all good but of course inconvenient especially if the OPC isn't handling things well.

This will never be a bore score style issue that they had with 996 and gen 1 997 cars I'm sure.
Lots of lessons learnt there.

Enjoy your 4.0's . Very lovely cars

I doubt Porsche will be putting it right once the warranty period has expired. It appears engine mounts and oil pumps probably need a recall.

In June 1997 my 1985 Carrera went for a top end rebuild at 112,000 miles.

It came back with new cylinder barrels and pistons due to....bore scoring.

It was thought to have been caused by over fuelling, mixture control was more primitive compared to now and the car was used daily, lots of short journeys etc. But it can happen.

Agreed, look at the glut of 991.2 Turbo failures

Does anyone know how much a short block costs? Would Porsche even sell one?

And how much would it cost to just repair a 4.0 in case oil pump went bang?

Does anyone know if the replacement oil pump has been updated?

I'll definitely be extending the warranty......

Lordy...

Just had a thought, surely this motor has been widely used in the 718 Spyder and 718 GT4? I thought the only difference to the engine was in software between the Spyder, GT4 and GTS to keep those as halo models?

I wonder how many GT4's \ Spyder's were produced over the last 4 years?

@OP Fingers crossed you get a new engine approved.

Specs may change, but the 718 Clubsport continued to use the 981 engine with tuning option (I forget the option code).

((X51 ... helped out lower down smile )

Interesting that the OPC didn't want to rebuild their own engine ...

Evening.

The servicing dealer have organised a lovely courtesy car for as long as is necessary and are pushing for a new engine for sure.

So no problems there at all.

I’m confident that Porsche will rectify matters, but it really is an awful experience to go through, my ultimate nightmare!

It certainly takes the shine off a new car. Many of my cars are elderly classics and it takes me time driving the cars to trust them not to let me down. You don't expect this with a new one and it will take you time even once the new engine is fitted ... as above !

You are certainly owed some good luck smile

Nice that your getting a new engine and yes, a bit carp for a new car but hate to tell you, if this is your worst nightmare in life you have a ste show ahead of you.

As you said, you have a lovely courtesy car for as long as and more than likely a new engine, relax and don’t sweat it.

IME 'pushing for' certainly doesn't = guaranteed new engine

If there was swarf in the oil then it will be through the engine . It’s unlikely a short motor would be fitted.
It would be worth asking that very question if for some reason the dealer is being told by Porsche GB to fit a short engine .

Every time we've had a courtesy Macan during a warranty repair it's been delivered to home by the OPC an hour away with a full tank of fuel and instructions NOT to refill it.

That's five free tanks of petrol so far.

Teething troubles...

The entire oil system should be replaced along with the engine/engine rebuild.

Getting swarf out of oil coolers is difficult and not something I’d trust the OPC to do properly. You wouldn’t really want the old debris running around that new engine!

Morning.

Thanks for all the support and kind comments.

Porsche have authorised a complete engine replacement, so I’ll sit back and be patient for now.

It will be like getting a new car when I get it back - do you think I should run it in?!!

😂
