Ahh..thats the plate that was on an old 996 C2 I had, but no longer, so it's on the 991 now

I moved into my new home this month. Maybe you can guess what attracted me to this particular house.

This weekend I built my new shed (also very satisfying), which allowed me to remove most of the piled up boxes of nonsense from my garage. Now it’s a great deal easier to see its potential.





I’ll soon move one of my play cars into it.

I look forward to seeing what I can make of the space.

I’m still considering. I’ll probably paint it white, put some pictures up, overhaul the workbench area with some decent tool storage. Maybe some flooring. I definitely want some quick jacks. I don’t think I’ll line and insulate it, don’t want to lose any space. It’s detached so might be a bit chilly, but it’s still better than outside, which has been my only option in winter previously.

There’s no rush. I’ll just enjoy all the lovely space for now.

Has anyone gone down the route of the 'over car' shelving/racking. BigDug do some, although given the width is 2130mm it's a squeeze for a lot of cars to actually get between the shelves (look at the clearance on the E90 M3!)

I was looking at getting some heavier duty 2.4m wide shelves and doing a similar thing - anyone tried it? My only concern would be something falling off and smashing the bonnet...

I've done a DIY version of that, using some steel box and wood to create a frame, topped off with some plywood sheet. Only has one shelf so it's more a workbench then a set of shelves, but It's useful space in a small garage. I made it wide enough for the car to fit underneath while still having room to walk past it. One edge is attached to the wall which helps free space underneath to get the car under. Never had anything fall off onto the car (yet!) But you raise a valid point; might add a lip at the back to stop things rolling off.

I'm struggling to find any pictures of it but I did something similar in my old house. I had a Z4 with a long bonnet in there and had wall mounted shelves running along the side wall rather than end as I found this didn't waste as much space. I'd rather have space against the wall to do something with than space by the door to drive through but it obviously depends on the garage length. There was a shelf the length of the bonnet a few inches above it and a shelf just above the height of the roof running above that the length of the car. Obviously means you can't get at all the stuff with the car in but that garage was a bit small to be working on cars in anyway.

I'm also a big fan of putting thin shelves above head height for light things such as cleaning products. Easy to see all of the little bottles and stops them taking up space on bigger shelves...

I would be nervous of that idea for the reasons you've pointed out. How about using kitchen cabinets and wall mounting them at a suitable height - Assuming you're not filling them with trolley jacks and dark matter they will be fine.

Ikea Besta is perfect for sensible budget Garage build, much more suitable than kitchen Units:

Available in two depths, one of which is much deeper than your typical kitchen wall unit. Modular, dirt cheap, a decent solid mounting system (long metal hanging brackets that link together), various door options, and an online configurator to design your setup.

I've done even more down the sides since that picture, even a nice 'backless' slim one which hides my electrical consumer unit and some high mounted, open front ones down the sides that give mega useful storage in a bit of free space your head will never occupy.

My Marley sectional concrete 'free to collector' special is a work in progress, hope to add completed photos here soon and definitely will clad over the pebbledash.. It took some collecting btw, worked out about 4 tonnes.

Will be pouring the slab separately as I'd have to move the entire garage off site to have the space for the pour



Edited to add, total spend on garage; Site mix trench pour £220, box of m8 nuts, bolts washers £34, total = £254.

I decided that I could add real value by knocking the shed down whilst rebuilding the garage and tagging a new garden room/home office/bar type space on the end. It's not essential as I really need somewhere to keep gardening crap but it seemed to make sense what with home working trend nowadays and you couldn't add a similar sized room to the house for the same money..

I'll report back once underway. Very hard to keep a reign on the interior luxurys!

Did you barrow all that concrete in? I need to get 4 cubes about 25 meters down my drive/garden and don't want to do 400 barrow loads in 15 minutes...

I'm past tamping stage and at insulating so concrete is imminent...



Note reclaimed PIR, and Crittal window, I'm probably one of the few people to make a double garage into a single garage (and workshop) so mostly technically still qualify for thread..
