where does everyone get there games from... steam?
Steam yes, also Good Old Gameshttps://www.gog.com/en
It really all depends if you want engaging story and have the time and enthusiasm for cut scenes etc.
If not then you want a game that provides you challenging game play as fast as possible with minimal time spent with anything like drawn out story or cut scenes.
I played through New Super Mario Bros U deluxe on a Nintendo Switch handheld console the last couple of months. Pick it up, play it for as long as you like and then just put it on stand by at any moment with the ability to pick it right back up where you left it witn a one second start up time. That really works for me when I'm usually arriving at my gaming sessions tired after work ad putting the kids to sleep. I'm 47 in a couple of weeks.
If you have time an love a good story and some gameplay after it then things like uncharted are a great suggestion. Though some of the other recommended games have already worn down my limited enthusiasm before they even get through the opening long drawn out story and I giuve up before I get hooked.
Welcome back to gaming. Have fun.

Mid 40s and I have never stopped gaming since I was introduced to the Intellivision as a kid. I went on to play Amstrad CPC, SNES, PS2, PC, Xbox 360, Xbox one X, PC again and now Meta Quest 2 VR (best £250 ever spent!).
I do wonder if I will ever tire of gaming. Will I be playing at 60? 80?
I wonder who the oldest regular gamer is on PH.

Haven't really stopped gaming since the 1980s
Witcher 3 is great, I have 100s of hours in my one and only play through.
Have just started Red Dead Redemption 2, is a bit slow at the start, but will persevere.
Cyberpunk 2077, did a second run through with the new update and dlc, just over 100 hours to meeting Hanako at Embers.
Definitely prefer open world to being pushed along the story on rails.
I like driving games, but impossible with just a keyboard, passable with a controller, really needs a wheel and pedals, that's a slippy, expensive, slope ...

Has GTA V got a game story or is it just bashing the shù$te out of each other?
There's a good single player story. As a beginner, you can set the difficulty to what suits. Once that's complete there's online too.It really is a terrific game. Well worth buying on steam if it's on sale.
I'm in my sixties. I play/do/whatever a lot of sim racing. But, that's a completely different and potentially financially ruining kettle of fish.

I'm not sure he'd call himself a regular gamer, but my dad at 75 still plays Doom, Wolfenstien 3D and other classics a few times a week. He reckons it keeps his reflexes sharp.I do wonder about reflexes. I often play APEX Legends on Xbox and I'm constantly getting absolutely smashed by the much younger player base. I've spent many hours on there but I'm always floundering about at the lower ranks. I'm not sure if it's my old man slow reflexes or whether I'm just really bad at the game.
52 here, haven't stopped playing games since I was 8 and we got the Atari 2600!
Had pretty much every system over the years, currently playing the PS5.
Still play a lot of games, 2-3 hours per night (much more preferable to sitting and watching the crappy soaps with the mrs!)
Favourite games - The Witcher 3, Ghost of Tshushima, Assassin's Creed series, Uncharted series and the Fallout series.
Welcome back to gaming OP, there's some wonderful stuff out there nowadays!

50 something here. Not a fan of first person shooters, and prefer something a bit more strategy based personally. Recent favorites:
Factorio - been playing on an off for years, currently playing the Space Exploration mod
Kerbal Space Program - glad I didn't buy it on Steam because I really don't need to see how many thousands of hours I've put in to it. Again a big modding community and I love Kerbal Operating System which allows you to code your own autopilot. KSP2 came out some time back but has a lot of teething issues so I've not tried it yet
Kenshi - Wander the wilderness with a sword while everyone tries to kill you
Whitcher 3 - Good overall plot but gets a little repetitive after a while
Baldurs Gate 3 - Relive your youth if you ever played the original Baldurs Gate or any DnD games as a kid
Civilisation - Been playing this series since the original, the newer ones are a bit overly complex though
You have a machine that will happily handle a VR headset, so might also be something to consider
Superhot VR - Fantastic game, time only flows when you move so you can stand still and work out your moves before you act. Shame it's not much longer though
Beat Sabre - One of the first VR games that took off, and still one of the best.

Depends on what kinds of game you like really, but Horizon Zero Dawn I found superb, if you want online FPS then Battlefield is a slower pace than Call of Duty in the main and you fly planes, choppers and drive tanks etc. For RPG type then Skyrim or Fallout 4 can't really be beaten IMHO. Be warned, Skyrim if you get into it is a time vampire, you will literally be sat at 9pm and go, I'll just take a look at that Crypt.. Then it is midnight and you wonder where the time went.......
