55 here and I struggle to find games the properly engage me, I lose interest at the 1st hint of repetition, however, after a long stint playing Rust, I'm now totally absorbed in DayZ.
Isn't DayZ repetative. i.e. you spawn on a beach with no gear and have to search for ages to get weapons and gear, then when you get killed you respawn on the beach and have to start from nothing again and again and again.
Initially, yes indeed.

However - once you get into the swing of things, and learn how to survive (staying warm and dry and not ill!) its super satisfying. I'm about 1 week in now in this particular "life" and I've made a small twig camp in butt-fuk-nowhere and I'm dipping in and out of mil bases and towns, returning to my "camp" via GPS and also "remembering" between which trees to turn left etc. You get a real feeling of being "out there".

I play on a low pop server. Weekends are a bit brutal as you get people camping doors and shooting you in the face for no good reason, whereas in the week the interactions are either minimal, or friendly.

Gathering weapons and gear is really easy once you have a routine and know where to look. Guns are really unimportant unless you are into the PVP side of it. PVE it can all be done with a knife/axe etc. You end up geared up naturally but weapons are next to useless in PVE unless they are supressed, and then ammo can be tough to find, so it's largely knife-play. Shoot an unspressed gun near a lot of Zombies and you are in deep doodoo.

Game has a natural break point too - night time. I log off and do something else!

I'm sure I'll bore of it soon! Tried/tyring Skylines II but I have a large city that mmakes money easily and it just doesn't feel like a challenge. DayZ is a horrific challenge :-)

toptip - spawn - get to a water pump asap. Drink till full, kill a few Z's with fists to get tinned food, relax. Getting water is THE number one priority when respawned, then food. After that, everything else can wait. Next is a knife, but Z's drop them so not hard, then a hospital/med centre for some form of disinfectant to make more bandages (or loot more bandages).

Thats reminds me I really should dust off the PS2 and fire up some of my old games.

Thats the original Grand Theft Auto with the top down view
I tried playing the original GTA recently - and had to stop after about 10 minutes as the low framerate and constantly zooming camera was genuinely making me feel nauseous. Not something I had when it was new, not sure if that's a result of getting older or that we're so used to smoother framerates now. Destruction Derby 2 is still great fun though.

I turned 50 in Jan. Regularly gamed since the zx81. Its been a good bonding thing for my son and I , he is 15 now.

We just got back from a trip to LA and it was great fun showing him places that are in GTAv .

I regularly play COD multiplayer free for all.

The best ever single player game ive ever played was 'Alien, Isolation' a real cult classic, and especially enjoyable if you are a fan of the original film.

First person shooter : honestly I'd avoid anything that puts you online against other players, the 10 year old players will kill you in the first 5 seconds and you'll get frustrated.

Id have to disagree there. Nowadays the games match you with players of similar skill levels. (SBMM, if you really want to open a rabbithole)

Having just started Demon's Souls, it's reminded me just how good this Soulsborne series is. Sekiro and Elden Ring are the only ones left on the list now.

Demon's Souls has the benefit of being the easiest entry to the series, though you will still die. A lot.

Personally, I prefer to play along with a walkthrough as there are so many hidden artefacts/areas.

Any other fans?

Similar age to you and I have dropped far too much of my life into the Total War series.

Rome (original) and Medieval 2 specifically.

A single campaign can take months.

Plenty of other great suggestions on here though, Skyrim for its time is probably the best game ever made.

Loved the original Dragon Age too.

Great isn't it? Although I felt quite narked that I put loads of effort into road building to then be moved on to the next area / find I'd need'nt have bothered. Similar with the mountain zip lines though less so!

Skipped a very large part of the cust scenes!

Oh, and I disabled the baby crying audio. That's not my idea of fun.... a wailing baby.

46 almost 47 here and still gaming. My trusty old 1080Ti died end of last year so went for a 4070. Rest of my rig is lagging behind now. Ive always preferred playing online multiplayer FPS games as find the competition much more appealing than completing a game by myself. Last 5yrs I have been hooked on PUBG which is a Battle Royale Multiplayer based on ARMA3. Ive racked up over 5,000 hours much to the wifes bemusement. It would be a hard game to get into now as the remaining player base is all the good players, streamers and pro players with a few cheats mixed in. But its free on Steam.

I'll play it again before 2 comes out and I doubt I'll bother with the road network, I only left 2 sections undone, zip lines all the way next time, way less effort.

55 here. Lived alone for a few years in my early fifties gamed on an Xboxs - mainly FPS (Wildlands, Farcry etc). Found it difficult to game once i moved in with my now wife as locking myself away after work at weekends etc was a bit antisocial. ----- STEAMDECK - brilliant piece of kit. Always easy to jump on for a bit of casual gaming - teamed up with xbox cloud gaming gives me the fix I missed.

I just keep playing older games that my 1080 can cope with. I'm not in to first person shooter or driving sims which the majority of modern games seem to be. When they finally iron out KSP2s teething issues I may need an upgrade though.

what do people think is the main reason/s for not playing games as much as when we were younger?

back from age 6-17 i played so much i had to be banned from playing as i never did anything else.

now these days i need reasons to play and cant get into them as i used to.

are games worse? or is aging just something that was always going to happen?

For my part, mostly just because I can't be arsed, too much effort etc...

Saying that, I've just had a quick blast on Serious Sam and Forza Horizon 4 for the first time in yonks. Occasionally I get the urge again. I might have a blast on Black Mesa again at the weekend. That was always a cool game.

I am a souls fan. There are a few on this forum. Amusing you say Demon's is an easy entry point. I played Bloodborne, dark souls, dark souls 2 and dark souls 3 before i tried demons on PS3. I couldn't get a foot hold and over time just gave up. Went back to it about a year later and finally got going properly and managed to beat it. I have played it a few times through on my PS5 version and love it. I am currently about a 1/4 of the way through a Bloodborne play through again. Just the best atmospherics. Love it. Enjoy Demon's on PS5. I thought it was a wonderful way to show off a PS5. Cheers

55 and still play . Used to be fps mostly but rsi injuries to forearms and hands limit that .
I find I get bored quicker and don’t have the patience with games like I used to .I just to un-installed starfield after about 4 hours because it was dull and had an annoying interface.
Some games have lasted less than 15 minutes ,
