Sad and chaotic scenes at Valhalla this morning:

Play at the 106th PGA Championship is delayed by 1 hour and 20 minutes after a tragic and surreal start to the day that saw world No 1 Scottie Scheffler detained in handcuffs by police.
According to police, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a bus close to the entrance to Valhalla Golf Club eight miles outside Louisville. This led to long traffic delays in both directions and with players anxious to get to the course, several (including Will Zalatoris and Cameron Young) abandoned courtesy cars and walked the last mile to the course in the rain.

Scheffler was detained by local police and led away in handcuffs by Louisville police after a traffic misunderstanding, ESPN reported.

The Masters champion reportedly attempted to drive past a police officer to enter the grounds, which led to his detention.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was “detained by police in handcuffs after a misunderstanding with traffic flow led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club.”

Darlington added, “The police officer attempted to attach himself to Scheffler’s car, and Scheffler then stopped his vehicle at the entrance to Valhalla.

The police officer then began to scream at Scheffler to get out of the car.

“When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs,” Darlington reportedd. "He is now being detained in the back of a police car.”

According to Darlington, the police officer did not seem to know it was Scheffler and also told him, “There’s nothing you can do. He’s going to jail.”
Given how weirdly heroic sports "journalists" think their subjects are, I suspect Darlington is guilty of ghastly poetic licence, and it's more likely Scheffler thought himself better than queuing with everyone else and tried to make his own way.

The optics for the State are awful. They might double down behind the local police. More likely there will be desperate face saving.

Yep, seems it was a case of rich sportsperson thinks they are above everyone else, and decided to ignore Policeman......not something you should really do in the USA no matter who you are, or think you are.
He should think himself lucky he didn't get shot, and only got arrested.

Other players it seems were more sensible, and got out of their cars and walked to the course in the rain.

Looks like he's in a spot of bother here...

The #1 Golfer in the world, Scottie Scheffler, was arrested this morning. He was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

He's arrived at the course, not clear if he's going to play.

More likely it was dark, raining and he thought he was dealing with a security guard. I’m always surprised that players drive themselves.

Security guards don't tend to have police cars with red flashing lights etc.

You'd have to be pretty thick to be a US citizen and not know a policeman when you see one, no matter what the conditions, especially when in that situation.

He just thought he was above the law.

I wonder if he'll have to play in the nice orange suit laugh

Agreed on the above, the fact that others got our and walked makes him out to be even more pompous.

If the Police tell you to stop. You stop. Very very simple. Particularly over there.

Given the police released him straight away and gave him an escort back to the course I suspect they've been over zealous (videos of them trying to drag him out the car allegedly), but we shall see what comes out in the wash.

They can be, however if he had stopped and had a quiet conversation explaining who he was there would have been no drama in the first place.

As already confirmed by McDowell and no doubt pretty much every other professional player, attempting to jump queues to get into the event is a daily occurrence for all of them.

I’ll be astonished if there isn’t massive backtracking and face-saving. Just as the police are a law unto themselves in the US, money is everything. The downsides here are too big for too many.

I guess that’s why they use courtesy cars. Much easier to recognise and have drivers who know the score.

Released having charged him... Of course they could be dropped.

Why should they?

The felony assault charge might likely get dropped, but I suspect the others won't. He was being a dick, why should he get away with it because he's a rich dick?

I said 'could' becasuse they could... or he could be convicted of all of them... no point assuming what might happen based on the current information available.

That’s kind of the system there (and increasingly here).. the most expensive lawyers will pretty much get you off anything
