Remember that in the 1969 Round Britain Powerboat race, that John Calcutt drove the first Avon Searider, very much experimental at that time.

God I love that film and the music.
I’ve done a fair bit of sailing with JC so that was great to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwQpHrCRpgI

To start in September seems a bit mental, but I'm loving the series so far. Lessons have clearly been learnt and the addition of the tender is good. I wouldn't want to do the entirety of the trip, but doing a leg looks like good fun.
I was confused about the ending, is he pausing for an extended period?

You check your charts, which have firing ranges marked on them ( he even mentioned that it showed on his GPS ), then you check online for when a range you will be crossing is active e.g. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/lulwort...
There's a submarine and torpedo testing range near where I used to sail a fair bit. The restricted area is cleary marked on the charts and in pilot books, and its also well known locally that you call up the related shore base facility to ask it it is OK to cross the restricted area (often it is as its not being used).Despite knowing all this, my father once attempted to sail right across the middle of this (24 ft Cornish Crabber) and managed to ignore all the calls on the VHF (probably because he had not switched it on or turned the volume up).
As there appeared to be no fleet tenders on hand to intercept and have a "friendly chat" the shore station decided to send out the minesweeper/offshore patrol boat of a certain middle-eastern navy that was there on exercise/training - according to my father, said boat came charging up to them firing blanks across his bow. Not exactly diplomatic, but it did the trick.
(wasn't a good day for my father as after detouring around the area, later that day they managed to park their boat on a rock on the way into the remote anchorage)

That looked a good run and looked like a bit more planning this time. MartG said:

Excellent, watched the first 10mins and will catch the rest later.Obvious nutters, but also learning fast, and just about enough caution to life to tell the tail!

Yes, he does seem to be taking a few more safety precautions - though personally I wouldn't go out in such a small boat in winter without a drysuit. Chances of surviving in the water for more than a few minutes is minimal.
You’d be surprised. Sea temp is around 8degrees. Survivability just in normal clothes without a buoyancy aid will be 12.5hrs give or take this time of year (or there abouts) ecsrobin said:

I thought a few minutes was short, but I am also surprised, as I would have put it at a few hours.Obviously at that point, remaining face up (not drowning) and raising the alarm suitable (its not being days) are the key objectives.

And that’s an average/most likely scenario there are lots of factors, fitter people will likely go before that, fatter people likely to last longer than that amongst other things. Obviously at that point, remaining face up (not drowning) and raising the alarm suitable (its not being days) are the key objectives.
