I have been advised by SWMBO that I need to organise a holiday for the two of us that doesn't include long road trips in noisy cars frown

I need some suggestions - the rules SWMBO has applied are as follows:

max flight duration 4.5 hours
must be warm, ie average daily temperature over 22 degrees
no too crowded
4 or 5 start hotel, preferably adults only
departure from Birmingham, Heathrow or Bristol at a push
No be somewhere we have been before, not North Africa

The places below we have been to already.
Mallorca
Croatia
Sardinia
Madeira
Cape Verde
South of France
Algarve
Costa Del sol
Costa Blanca
Venice
Northern Spain

Recommendations for decent hotels please, preferably close to the sea

Budget circa £5k for a week

As has been mentioned already, Crete is both ideal for the time of year you're looking at, and big and varied enough that a 2nd, 3rd or even 4th visit can still turn up something different.

Personally, I'd steer well clear of the north coast, it's way too built up and completely lacking in charm. Apart from Ierapetra, you can't really go wrong on the south coast, but my preference is either Paleochora is the south west corner, or Paleokastro on the east coast. Not really sure what to recommend in the way of hotels though, as we always go "self catering". Plenty of Villas with pools to rent.
We have done Crete three times. First was our honeymoon. We want to go to lances we haven’t been to before.

Sicily is fantastic and would be very warm in October. My only tip would be that it's the size of Wales so don't expect to do it in a week.
Like Sardinia which we visited last year. Its a big place!

Thansk for all the suggestions folks.

Current shortlist is:

Sicily
Menorca
Corfu

We dont fancy the Canaries, can't explain why, but we are both totally ambivalent about the place.

We like to travel around and always hire a car, so Malta is a bit small, although my great grandfathers war memorial is on Malta.

Azores are too much of a faff once you are at the end of September, and we have done Madeira multiple times.

How about Corsica? It's a little bit further north, but it's a very different island to Sardinia and well worth a visit. You need to pick your locations carefully as some parts of the island are very expensive.
Sardinia was getting a little too cool in the evenings at the end of September last year, I would expect Corsica to be similar

We have moved the date now looking at second week of September.

Looking for a quiet hotel with nice landscaping and a terrace for breakfast with great views.

Now looking at Greek islands (except Cyprus, Crete, Rhodes), Menorca, Sicily)
