Why didn’t they just sell it as a Passat Grande or similar and kept the mechanics the same as the Passat other than larger engines.

Phaeton Estate/Avant?

Ok, it would have been more PH council, but it was already perceived as a bit council by its target market.

A great shed. Huge for the money. Basically a brave pill car, too.

The very last facelift version known as GP4 (MY2014) has some nice led lights, new chrome trim, optional 20” wheels, etc. I would assume most niggles were sorted as well:

I found this offer at mobile.de:

https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id...

First Registration: 03/2015

Gad westy Kawasiki

I typed from memory....and having searched a bit, it was probably Clarkson who said it in one of his columns.....but on TopGear he said it could do over 200 mph......without the limiter.

https://www.topgearbox.com/cars/entertainment/top-...

VW spent over 1 billion Euro's developing it.....it has to be the best sleeper car of all time.

Given the prices they seem to be going for in Germany surely the shed is worth £1,000 of anybody's money even with an immobiliser fault?

Per the ad, that car will be sold trade / export only, which may mean there's something badly wrong with it.

VW probably sold more Phaetons in Germany than the rest of the world combined. Some will be very good, some won't be so good!
The more sheddy end of Phaetons don't make the mainstream dealer-saturated selling platforms - with associated premium pricing. Try ebay small ads to get a more accurate temperature reading of the market. I had a quick look - there are 484 Phaetons listed in total. The dirt cheap ones have issues - such as gearbox damage, some with air suspension issues, and quite a few with expired inspections. The cheapest driveable ones with a valid ticket are from €3.5k - everything up to that point has something wrong with it.

No Brakes...why didn't

I think you will find that Piech insisted it was sold as a Volkwagen, but one that would be better than any Merc or BMW equivalent.....it was one of his classic follies, like the Veyron.....he loved to give his engineers nearly impossible targets, hence the drive all day at 300 Kmh, and keep the inside at a constant 22 temp, even in a 50 degree heat

I was in Berlin in the late 2000s and remember seeing a ton of goverment Phaetons near the Reichstag. That might explain why they sold primarily in Germany...

Doing a Phaeton uber estate would've differentiated it from the supposed competitors?

Aren't hyper SUVs uber estates on stilts?

A non-runner and a bag of sand cheaper? The first is very bad, and the second probably doesn’t compensate for the first.

I reckon that it was absolutely aimed at the German market. Flying under the radar, luxury but without standing out.

I remember looking into these a few years ago when a famous celebs one went up for sale was most interested int he w12 version but my funds didn’t allow for the running costs of this beast at the time. Something I now regret as what a sound that engine made!

The W12 running costs only get higher as time goes on. Maybe an Audi A8 6.0?!

There is quite an active UK based facebook owners group if you are seriously interested and need any advice! I've had mine three years now and it has been a pleasure to own and drive but I don't use it as a daily.
