If this is a base model, I'd just moan about the rear styling. I can't actually believe they are releasing this as a Cooper S!

Is the Head of Mini actually called, “Stefanie Sausage”? If so, fantastic name.
Shame about the exhausts and the gormless face on the mini.

The configurator is up on the German Mini site:
https://configure.mini.de/de_DE/configure/F66/

The range of colours is terrible:

  • Essential - silver, black.
  • Classic - red, yellow, silver, white, light green (hideous), black.
  • Favoured trim (weird name) - silver, white, black, light green (still hideous), dark green.
  • JCW - red, silver, white, black, dark green, dark grey.
No blue, no "proper" silver.

Sat in the new electric version recently and the interior isn’t as bad as I expected it to be.

But still not feeling the love for this over my existing fleet of F56, R59 and proceeding Hyper blue R53.

The prices look to be a joke, but I still expect a discounted golf R to be about 30k or 300 pcm so it might be me that needs to be recalibrated …

This segment isn't exactly awash with competitors nowadays.

Petrol, relatively cheap, relatively light - it's a yes from me.
Have you ever spec'd a MINI? Back in 2014, yes 10 years ago, I bought a new F56 Cooper in volcanic orange. My options came to about £4.5k, which took me up to basic spec Cooper S price wise.

FWIW I like it. Surprised they dropped the bonnet scoop, even though it wasn't functional, and similarly with the exhausts, that was a nice design feature.

Had a quick look on the configurator, some of the wheels are shocking, and very limited choice of colours - bizarre.

That looks massively underwhelming with all of the signature S design cues in the bin. It looks really, really dull.

Does it definitely have the DCT gearbox? Seems odd when the closely related 1 series uses the Aisin gearbox.

I do wonder whether pistonheads drafts in writers from " Barbers weekly" or "Billiards time the official magazine of Bar Billiards" and gives them a press release for a car and tells them to write a car story for a car website.

Because when i look at the New Cooper S, the first thing i see and question is the missing scoop. As owner of many Mini's i know only the R53 made use of it. But it was so important a styling feature to set the cooper S above the other models that Mini kept it for 17years after its usefulness was filled in with solid plastic. But no mention or reference to it at all? Seems odd not to mention it. It also highlight something pretty major, that Mini don't really want to be doing this model. The lack of an exhaust pipe visual again something the cooper S and JCW were almost built round shows that Mini don't want to be in that market anymore. Even the colour chosen for the press car, very tame.

it feels very much like they have played down the Petrol image, that dirty awful thing. and yet again another manufacturer who has chosen to completely ignore hybrid tech, all or nothing.

As for the design. Front is very tame, still a mini but its lost any drama, the run out F56's actually looked very brutal and i really like that look. But the front is passable.

The rear however is terrible, the top half started so well, but then the bottom half was clearly designed in another studio without internet or any contact with the top half designers.

I will give them one thing though, that interior is pretty amazing. for the money they are selling these at and looking at the competition I love how simplistic and stylish that interior is, the central screen looks great, proof will be in the use, but i really like that.

i suppose we should be happy that there is a Petrol, but I'm not expecting much out of it,

oh PH, please take a look at that logo and give you writers a jolt to remember the audience they are writing for, its not knitting heads its Pistonheads,
Not just the scoop missing.. fuel filler and the twin centre exit exhausts.

No distinctive bonnet scoop (that didn't do anything) or exhausts... and no manual option. What is going on.

Prior model was 187 hp for Cooper S if memory serves, the 192 hp was the pre LCI cars.
Looks like an Ora Funky Cat, because it is one, developed in conjunction with Ora…

So many on the Mini forums say they will abandon Mini for their next car on looks of this, not sure what they think will replace it though…
Pre LCI R56 Cooper S (N14 engine) was 174 hp. LCI (N18 Engine) was 184hp.

R56 JCW with the N14 and N18 were 211hp.

They nailed it with the R50/R53/R56. Lost the plot with the F56 and this abomination can only be described as 'Stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread' Time to hang up the gloves MINI or go completely back to the drawing board.
Yup, MINI definitely went wrong with the F Series.

No visible exhaust tips showing is a shame!
I believe the JCW version will have a visible single central exhaust.

Manual was dropped in the current model last year or the year before that I believe.

It did give them an excuse to the release a limited edition model though that only came as a manual.

Not strictly true - you can still order a manual - they did drop them for a while about a year back because of supply issues to do with electrical components

Ah OK, didn't know that. Don't think I've seen anything on social media about them being available again. Plenty on the limited edition model and people complaining about them being auto only though.

The Sport trim option makes it more Coopery, but then the only colours on Sport are red, black, white or grey.

That back end.. ugh ! Is there an option to NOT have the stupid tacky Union Flag lights ? Front end is hardly any better.
Inside it gets even worse - that humungous dayglo screen will be a most unwelcome light source when driving on a wet night.

Mini design peaked at this - anything before or after has been dull in comparison. No other Mini shouts "I'm an ugly fker and I don't give a st".

Sadly, it seems we're never going to see the likes of it again.

Future classic?

Only if it's a manual diesel. A 3700 mm long two seater manual diesel is a wild automotive concept.

I'll go through the plus points first.
1. It's petrol powered.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6. Did I say it was petrol powered?
