Very nice. Is it sitting a bit low, or does it just look that way because the wheels are quite small?

Whilst not as cute as the 205, these (from memory) were a more resolved car to drive.

I think the 3-door 309 GTis had cable-operated opening rear windows; the levers were just to the rear of the handbrake - although I may be confused. Anyhow, a nice feature.
I came to ask if I'd remembered that feature correctly, it seemed incredibly novel at the time.

Are there any 309 GTI Goodwood's left? How much would they be!

They did indeed - other stuff I’ve had came with keep fit opening rear quarter vents …..but the Megane Coupe and my current 6-pot ti hatch has electric ones

Ah, thank you!
Good to know my ageing memory still works a bit.

We had a number of 205s and 309s in the family back in the day, 1.6 and 1.9s, a 1.4 205 XS, 1.6 309XS,the best handling were the 309 GTI 3 door ones.

All great cars

There is a rather interesting looking Gti Goodwood on eBay at the moment with a v6 upgrade and 200 bhp.

Classic hot hatch and less of these around compared to 205's in the day.
The facelifted J plate on I preferred especially in Red 3Door shape smile

These are so cool, I still have fond memories of my '88 red two-door. Altho the quality was horrendous, even compared to other brittle's like Alfa 75.. I mean there was one thing breaking each week, no less.

Today I'd have the rare late 309 GTI16 which obviously had the 16v engine, 148hp cat & 160hp non-cat.

In Sweden they're all this amazing met.blue with blue carpet & half-leather seats.

Brilliant. I had a 1.9 205 in 88, this was on the cards to be my next car, but! Shame on me I got an MG Montego turbo instead. Yes I am stood in the naughty corner, and yes it's unforgivable. But when your 30, turbos were the way forwardbiggrin

I guess I was lucky with mine - in 3 years can only remember the undertray coming loose

Although echoing what poster Wren said above, a Peugeot mechanic advised me to change at 80k as he reckoned as a lot of things needed renewing at that mileage

I always liked the looks of these, more so than I did the 205. Lovely-looking car.
When I was at primary school, I was given an end-of-term project to write a novel. My hero in it (a detective/secret agent investigating an international crime syndicate) drove a 309GTI.
Now that's a story I'd like to read. Great stuff

Such a shame the GTi16 model never came to the UK bet they would have sold like hot cakes.
Plenty of engine conversions back in the day, turbo or MI16, or L.A.D with their porting and polishing and very optimistic power gains biglaugh but should have done it from the factory.
I know turbo technics did a few official 205s for the factory but don't recall seeing a 309?

My intention in the early noughties was to progress from my first car - a 205 Roland Garros - to a 205 1.6 GTI and then a 309 GTI.

All the mags said the 309 was the sweeter handler and 309 GTI prices were always behind 205 1.9 GTI prices iirc.

The 205 played me up with hot starting so I had a change of heart and opted for a more sensible Mk2 Golf GTI 8v instead. Which failed its MOT needing some welding 6 months later.

I loved the Golf for that brief time but, in hindsight, a 205 GTI wouldn't have played me up in the same way as the carb'd 205 did. So I should have stuck to the plan. 205 and 309 GTIs have always been a scratch I wish I'd itched as a result.

It was out of budget at the time, but I did hear about an Mi-16 swapped 309 Goodwood locally back then that I really kick myself about now!

Had this F reg 309 Sri for about a month back in the summer of 1997. It was low miles 70k or so from memory. Well looked after and all original. Damn that lift off oversteer drivingbiglaugh This pic was taken after it was towed out of the ditch further up the road, where it did a 180 degree spin complete with full roll and back onto its wheels.

Ended up having a 205 XS as a stop gap car about 5 years later and it reminded me how much fun Peugeots from that era were to drive.

Always fancied a 309 GTI Goodwood though.
Surprised you did not save that with a dab of oppo! wink Actually it seems to have held up pretty well after the roll, almost lending itself to a pick up conversion.

On a trip to Edinburgh in the mid 80's my father's Rover 3500 SD1 Vanden Plas suffered a seized engine due to defective oil pump. It was rendered a right off and he had to hastily buy a new car there and then. He ended up with a bright red 309 SRi complete with full body kit, spoilers and GTi wheels. It was such an unusual car for him to buy, but we all loved it. It got masses of attention from the youth of the day!

Loved my Goodwood - my first ‘fast’ car. Sold it to my brother-in-law, just so I could keep driving it. Check The Car says it currently SORN, so hopefully it’s still alive somewhere…
