Back in the day my friends had 309 GTi's and 205 GTi's and they always said the 309 handled just that little bit better and was more predictable than the 205s. One friend had a 5dr 309GTi and another had a 309 GTi Goodwood edition that he took to LAD motorsport in Morcambe and had a few engine mods done to it (fast road cams, gas flown head etc..). It was a lovely car. Another friend had a 205 GTi that he bought off an elderly gentleman. Low mileage and mint. Great, great cars.

I owned a Gen 2 309gti in a light blue colour back in the 90s, was defiantly a looker and have never seen one the same colour since. Really should of taken a few photos of it.

Was decently quick and handled itself well, downside was that pretty much every type of fixing/bracket from seat rails to engine bay failed come time which of course had nothing to do with my enthusiastic driving style of the era.

Mods of the day were a K/N induction system, superchip and power boost valve.

The closest I came to a 309GTI was putting a steering wheel from one (from a scrapper) onto my '83 205 1.1GL. A chunky leather bound wheel with 'GTI' on a rusty 13 year old beige (Antelope Beige according to the paint code, no less) tin can did not improve this spotty 17 year old's image, unsurprisingly!

A couple of years later a mate had a 309 SRi, that clung on to the road very well as he was doing his qualifying lap impression every time we were out in it.

I always liked the looks of these, more so than I did the 205. Lovely-looking car.
When I was at primary school, I was given an end-of-term project to write a novel. My hero in it (a detective/secret agent investigating an international crime syndicate) drove a 309GTI.
That's a lovely story to tell. I'm sure that hero has much more cool than the 007 in any Aston.

As others have said always preferred this to the 205 (but had a real soft spot for both). My mother had a 1.9gld - suffice it to say, not quite the same appeal (managed to cook the front brakes within 2 hours of passing my test!).

IIRC it cost around £300 back then which did require some contemplation, The guy at Falkland Performance said "the difference would be night and day" but it certainly wasn't and I ended up removing the mods.

my first 309 gti came with the above mods plus koni's and slightly lowered, it certainly felt quick.
It was one of the first ones in a pale faded red, almost orange colour E reg, that was an eye opener how well it could corner brilliant cheap fun in 96.

It might have been placebo in fairness, but I always thought that the 309 GTi that I went out in with the superchip on it felt quick at the time as well. Really good times when I look back now for sure. smile

Save your money and get a left hooker from France. You could get them with the 16v engine from factory over there.

Looks lovely. You'd need to be a Pug collector with cash to spare to part with 16K.

A really underrated car the 309, though at this money I’d be going 306 GTi 6 with a parts/bork fund (sorry!) as that’s where my nostalgia lies (and I’ve learned how not to crash one since I owned mine). If you had a 309 in your back catalogue though I can absolutely see why you’d buy a good one like this. Peugeot nailed FWD ride, handling and steering feel better than just about anyone else I reckon between the mid eighties and late nineties.

can't remember when for the last time I saw a 309 GTI , still nice though, but personally I like the 205 GTI way more.

This one also mentioned in the article, I do like, ok not the red interior, but the Dimma and M16 engine for that money, not bad those days.

I remember all the reviews back in the day saying the 309 was a better drive than the 205, but the 205 just looked so much better!

Which may explain the price differences now they aren't usually getting driven like they were in the 80s. laugh

Always preferred the 309 to the 205. Looked better, less effeminate and more practical.

Had a facelift (bridge spoiler) 5-Door GTI in the mid-90s. It would leave my friends' 205GTIs for dust in the twists - they were truly worried about carving a 205-sized hole in the nearest hedgerow. It was white with a big sliding sunroof, and for a couple of years as I moved up and down the country with work, utterly reliable. Nice big boot to help with the moves and the odd camping holiday to France. And then it hit about 70K and things just started going wrong; water pump and starter motor went in quick succession and then my head was turned by a Corrado VR6 for sale locally and a deal was done….Great car, and I look back on it with great fondness (and it was so much better than the 8v Golf GTI with manual windows (!) the dealer tried to sell me instead of it…).

Never had a 309gti, but drove a few in the day and they handled better than the 205Gti, but I liked the looks of the 205 better, and had one of each over the years.
