As the title says, first ever auto, 2020 Volvo xv40, nice car to drive and all that but an absolute pein when it comes to parking or any slow speed manoeuvres.

Put the car into either reverse or drive, I’m hardly touching the accelerator and it’s off like a scalded cat before I slam the breaks on.

I must be doing something wrong if I can’t get the car to crawl forwards/reverse at a snails pace.

Any advice other than get rid and go back to a manual gearbox.

I must say I had a similar issue with my 2017 Golf DSG a few years ago... just had to learn to be gentler with the throttle!

You could try a throttle pedal re-learn? Over time cars adjust to driving habits. Different in every car but in most cars it involves turning the car on and off with the accelerator pedal fully depressed

Ironically I have the exact opposite issue with my BMW 530i E39 - constantly starting off in 2nd gear and I really have to kick it down to get it to accelerate!

The last automatic i drove (2019 Passat) crawled forward/backwards without any input from the accelerator, just lift your foot of the brake

Not sure if the Volvo system is the same but I'd assume it is

Sounds like you're just getting familiar with the car, rather than it being any issue with it being an automatic.

Is that it? No explanation? At least you could tell us what you did to solve the problem, it might help others.

He quoted and bolded, so I would assume the answer's right there?

Just lifting his foot off the brake rather than applying the accelerator I would assume, as in most if not all automatics, using the inbuilt "creep" facility hehe

Yes, sorry. Just followed the advice from Danny, put it in drive/reverse and dont press the accelerater!

I must admit I am surprised you didn't work that out for yourself.

I'm an auto fan. But I drove a friend's BMW M4 (F82) and it didn't creep once off the brake. I took my foot off the brake to park it and it just sat there. It was then Russian Roulette on the accelerator to get it to move.

Never drove an auto like it before or since.

Autohold? Pretty standard on most modern autos where it applies the handbrake automatically when stationary until you tap the throttle to release it and move off.

It was the " I’m hardly touching the accelerator and it’s off like a scalded cat" that baffled me.

Was going to add, you drive autos at low speed with the brake, not the gas.

The M DCT on the F82 doesn't creep without a quick stab of the throttle to get it doing.

Earlier M transmissions were a pain to park.

The solution to this is to get a car with a CVT box which all phers seem to hate but does what you want to do above…

Don't even know if my DSG Yeti creeps or not - I just don't think about it - will check in a mo! The R8 R-Tornic doesn't, thats for sure, was very tense parking in the garage 1st few times. You have to "gently" stab to get it going slowly!

Extract from Jeremy Clarksons review of the BMW M4 (F82) from 2014:

And the throttle response is a little more squidgy, a problem that’s made worse by a seven-speed flappy-paddle gearbox that offers no creep. Unlike a standard automatic, the car won’t move until you put your foot on the accelerator. Which makes parking a jerky bloody nightmare

You'd think someone from BMW would have told him it was just the Autohold rolleyes
