My MY23 A110 has front and rear parking sensors fitted plus the reversing camera. I’ve noticed that the front sensors rarely if ever activate when driving slowly up to an object when in D, but will activate immediately if I put the car into reverse.

This means that if I park up fairly closely to an object nose in (with no response from the front sensors), when I put the car into reverse to back out of the space, the front sensors immediately activate and tell me how close I am to the object I now have very little chance of hitting.

Has anyone else noticed this behaviour?

I have front and rear sensors (no camera), the front ones are realy slow to respond but they do work in D. I have to park really close to the house and they work once I'm close, stopped and creeping the last few inches.

Id say this was pretty much standard on most modern cars tbh parking sensors are activated once reverse is selected and switched off once car has exceeded 20kmh otherwise they are going off all the time in traffic etc

I've not come across a car that requires reverse to be engaged to activate front sensors before, usually they activate when driving below certain speeds (the manual indicates they come on below 6mph). I'll get the garage to have a look when it goes in for a service.

Quite possibly an issue, my 2020 Legende doesnt come on unless reverse is selected first, a clients partner damaged her Bentley when nosing into somewhere and claimed parking sensors on front didnt work, Bentley responded with they dont until reverse is selected, at least Alpine is smaller and easier to see the corners.
Since that incident I have checked quite a few cars in here ( we mainly do Porsches plus a few others) all have been the same with very few exceptions ( our transit van and tbh that was annoying)

Didn't know that. Under what circumstances would front parking sensors be in any way useful if they only worked when you were in reverse gear?

Is there not an option in the instrument binnacle to set the front sensors to automatically come on? I seem to remember there is. Car is on the car deck of the IOM ferry at the moment so can’t check.

They should work in drive too. Mine go off when I exit my garage as the door frame is fairly close. The fronts also go off when reversing into the garage for the same reason.

Edit: there is a setting so perhaps they’ve been disabled.

They turn on when reverse is selected then stay on until you have reached 20kmh, so if you are shunting around in a tight space they will stay on until the 20kmh, dont take this as gospel on A110 but it is on an awful lot of cars and mine dont work if i drive closely up to something

Got home tonight , drove straight onto drive up to garage door and front parking sensors started beeping…… never done that before , seems I was wrong in the case of Alpine , still stand by this on other makes though.

Every day is a school day
