A very good and now sadly late friend of mine had a 2CV in the late Seventies. He was a teacher, and his teacher mate Kevin also had a 2CV . In the long summer holiday , accompanied by their very sexy partners, they'd drive to Provence and spend most of the summer there. My first taste of Chateauneuf du Pape was from a bottle which had travelled home in the 2CV and it was divine.

Well into old fartdom now, I can think of few better summers than being a twenty- something with a hot girlfriend in Provence , travellng en plein air in a 2CV . Cripes , there's something in my eye ...

Great story, coppice.

For my own part, I did something similar in 2001 in my SAAB 900 Monte Carlo Convertible, ultimately taking it back to the place it was named after: Monte Carlo. I went with my girlfriend (now wife) and we stopped off en route in the Beaujolais region for "essential supplies".

Highlights were touring the vineyards and tasting a little at each one, lapping the Grand Prix circuit in Monaco (slowly) and attracting more attention on the Croisette in Cannes than any of the Ferraris or Lamborghinis.

Lowlights were the hail damage on the way home near Macon and watching the drama of 9/11 unfold on Sky News in the hotel on the last night, which made the Channel crossing the next morning quite a tense affair.

Pics from before digital photography was much of a thing:

Brilliant!

I must admit to having a slight wig out at some of our overnights, especially the first one in Tours. I’ve not planned the route, but getting off a ferry that lands at 14:30 and driving for 240 miles/6 hours doesn’t seem like a good plan to me. Hey ho, c’est la vie!

Morning checkover has revealed a rotted driveshaft gaiter clip, leading to a light spraying of grease over the O/S heat exchanger etc. Fixed with a zip tie, hopefully!

It gets better! You've become an exemplar of sustainability by carrying out your own rustproofing while you drive!

Is the end of the cable tie cut at an angel, (hard to tell in the photo), if it is try to cut it flat as sure as eggs is eggs (across a ploughed field) it will stab you the next time you put you hand anywhere near it smile

I’ve purposefully left it sharp to remind me wink

Edited to add, trimmed neatly now as I’ve found some nail clippers that work much better than my old Knipex wire cutters thumbup

Reminded me of a long run me and my then (now ex) girlfriend made down through France - camping in an MX-5 NA - we stopped off in Chateauneuf du Pape to grab a few bottles to bring home with us. Had to drink them enroute as there was so little luggage space. We drove along the south coast from Marseille to Canne, Nice before heading into the Alps for the return trip. The silver MX-5 definitely seemed to turn lots of heads. Probably something to do with stupid English people driving round with the top down in August...

Also - good to read the trip is going well so far OP. Hopefully the 2CVs ailments remain minimal and just character forming enough to create good anecdotes!

Maybe worth ordering one for delivery to one of your known stop-over points? You don't have to fit it - just insurance in case the tie doesn't hold up. Good luck with the trip anyway biggrin

Well done.

Final piece of useful advice from me: don't forget to drive on the other side of the road over there*

* Unlike the wally in the 205 who nearly piled into me 50m outside the port the first time I ever drove abroad. Unlikely as it may seem I was on the correct (right, right?) side of the road and he, a local, was on the wrong (left, right?) side.

The cable tie on the boot will hold up just fine, it's more or less the recognised default fitment.

It's better than nothing but my experience was it still oozed grease at high speed as I couldn't do it up tight enough even with pliers, once home replace it with the proper clip.
