I was just pointing out that it’s not rare for people to have conditions that make it hard to manage their weight.
You're wrong though. It is rare. There's medication for almost every ailment available. People have to take it of course.

Forgive the vagueness, but I recall some news story a few years ago, about a "fat gene" that some people had. I may be wrong, but I recall thinking that the additional weight that might be caused by having the gene was stated to be fairly insignificant compared with sort of weight that many people carry.

Some medications will cause weight gain.

What you’re claiming isn’t factual.

Anyway, can we get back to this thread being helpful rather than another “yell at the fatties” thread?

An example:

Thyroid issues can result in weight gain. Fact.

Medication widely available from the NHS can restore normal thyroid function. Fact.

No, the fact that a gathering of people in the UK now often resembles a weebles convention is surely down to undiagnosed common illnesses?

Nothing can be done, can it?

You are correct if my memory serves me well. Something like 1 in every 400 people 'may' have the fat gene and this 'may' trick the body into storing up to 2.5 stone excess adipose tissue. Rather less excess fat than a huge number of obese people carry.

There are people who will have genuine medical issues, but it seems unlikely that they all happen to be hanging around whenever I venture into shops, theatres, motorway services etc.

First of all, I never said that obesity isn’t an issue or that some people just overeat.

All I disputed was the assertion that there’s only rare cases where someone would have a medical problem that affects their weight. Because it’s wrong.

A minority will have the 'fat gene'
A minority will have underlying medical conditions or are taking medication with side effects
The majority do 1 or more of the following, over eat,eat unhealthily, live sedentary lives, take no exercise .

Again, that doesn’t counter anything I said.

Some common medications that can cause weight control problems

Steroids, diabetes medications, birth control.

I’m not saying that a majority of people have these problems, just that they’re not rare.

"Rare" is subjective.

Most people aren’t fat because of medical reasons. Anyone who thinks that is the case with that is a moron in my eyes.

Tiny tiny percentages will be fat because of a medical issue. One of my wife’s mates being an example - doesn’t take her thyroid meds, gets thin. Takes them and eats normally, gets a bit podgey, takes them and eats like a pig - gets fat. So actually even there most of it is her fault.

Nobody is disagreeing with that.

(First part before you edited, no comment on your wife’s mate’s story.)
