I can't get my head around the joy of exploring new places if it's all organised and there's a fixed time limit for how long you stay in each place.

Also the people... Pasty befuddled dumb dumbs that plonk themselves down at the most obvious, most touristy restaurants each time they waddle off the ship rolleyes

It's just a floating retirement home.

I'm not really a fan of cruises smile
Depends very much on the cruise line. If you are prepared to pay the money, it can be completely different to your idea of it.

How much money do you have to pay for the ship to stop where you want for as long as you want?

Exactly!

And we do charter boats sometimes, not quite super yachts.. they stop where we want and we don't dine at the captain's table ala cruise ship nobbery, we go to nice restaurants and chat to the locals smile

I once installed a giant water feature for a famous Monaco yacht broker for the annual yacht show, I boarded a couple of the €100m+ yachts, they're insane. I also got one of the yacht brokers company drivers arrested and their range rover impounded whilst running a last minute errand.. Mr yachts PA made a single phonecall and all was forgiven and the poor guy set free. Oops.

Weird life and set of rules for the super rich.. but still someone less weird in my mind than going on holiday with 800 strangers and all going to the same places at the same time.

Have you never stayed in a hotel?

You’d have loved the ship I did my last contract on…8,200 onboard.

Yes of course I've stayed in hotels. And if I like the place and hotel I stay longer, if I don't I head off somewhere else. I don't ask the other 200 guests if they think it's time we move on - a hotel doesn't really equate to a shared journey.

But I apologise for my tongue in cheek comments. One of my friends is an account manager at celebrity and she shows me the latest stuff they put on the larger ships, it is impressive! I'm just a free spirit when it comes to travel and exploration.

Actually, I totally get the criticisms of the cruise industry. I can't moan too much though, it's given me Mrs Guitar, a cool house, some great cars and, in the early years, more fun than anyone should be allowed to have had.

What do you do on the ships?

If captain, you win. If cabin boy, tell us more about the early years fun.. scratchchin

Whatever it is, is the income still mostly/all tax free? That's gotta help with job satisfaction smile

Indeed.

And yes, tax-free. And lots of tips.

That said, I am currently having quite a long break from ships.

Well in that case you can ignore all my previous criticisms of the punters on the ships - you get paid and tipped, that makes sense wherever you are and it's good to make even 'those people' have a great time!

Hope you get back aboard soon if it's a life you love smile

The thread took a tangent, it happens.

It's like when you're supposed to running an all conquering F1 team and then instead you mess it all up because you decided to cheat on your wife with your lead designers PA.

And we're back to Horner.

Let's be fair to the PA, she told him to fk off and leave her alone, he didn’t. It's not her fault the bloke can't control himself or use his imagination.

And from your comment I'd assume you've never actually been on one?

TBF I'd never do any of the organised group tours, I have always just explored independently or if enough time, prebooked a hire car to explore further afield.

The fiddling with the PA took place on a cruise ship, hence the new twist to this thread!
