The MG6 has always had a weird fascination for me. In some ways I think it's quite interesting being one of the first of the "new" MGs and the styling, though not breath-taking, I didn't exactly hate. I think they missed the mark by not having something that was a true MG, quick, handled well good value . If you look at the old Rover 45 and MG ZS by comparison, the Longbrdge engineers could work a chassis with very little as a basic platform. I get the feeling that either money or confidence didn't get the best out of the 6 and it ended up being more a cynical exercise in using the MG name.

That said, you could buy this, pop it along to your local wrapping company and live your BTCC dream

A bit dreary, but a tidy and modern(ish) looking car for £2k IMO.

Looks presentable and well cared for, will probably drive pretty well, certainly will go alright, and I seem to recall the Chinese addressed the K-series HGF Achilles heel swiftly and successfully enough to make Rover's ongoing hesitation / failure to do so seem a little embarrassing.

As long as you can get spares for it at a reasonable price, I reckon you could do a lot worse.

Is that a good or a bad thing being assembled in the U.K.?

As cheap cars go in 2024 it’s actually quite good value making it a good shed if you only have sub £2k to spend .

I'd completely forgotten these existed, and yeat now I've seen the badge again I do recall having seen them.

Howerver they are so unmemorable I've no idea when I last saw one. They're the sort of bland that Mitsubishi Carisma and Nissan Almera drivers would switch to when their existing cars started to feel exciting.

Damn good as a shed though.

A lot of, admittedly dull, car for the money.

A good shed but will be nowhere near top 10 sheds of the year because it lacks the jeopardy and faded glamour of an old Beemer or Lexus.

It looks like it has held up well for the age and mileage - which surprises me for 'early' Chinese cars, however I'd either be buying a more used Honda/Kia etc for build quality at this price or something more interesting (and knackered). This fits neither the build quality or exciting quality - so its a no..

It was a thoroughly mediocre car when new and time probably hasn't helped... but with second hand car prices as they are I can certainly see the appeal to someone who's just after a modernish car to get them and their family from A to B reasonably cheaply. I've never driven one, but reviews imply it's quite fun in a crude sort of way (which would certainly be in keeping with the MGs I have driven).

Within 100 miles of me, Autotrader only shows about 50 cars of this age or newer for under £2k and most of those look pretty ropy and/or are too small for a family. An equivalent Octavia, which seems broadly similar in terms of ethos even if it's a large step ahead in quality, would cost you £5500!

This.

It’s not exciting or interesting or particularly brave. It’s probably a pretty sensible buy for the cash really.

I think they did the same with the 6 - here is Autocar's mini-review in 2011:

"Better still is the MG 6’s chassis, which is quiet and supple, yet still controls body movements tightly. It’s clear that a great of MG Motor UK Ltd’s effort has gone into creating a convincing compromise between composure and sporting feel here, and it hasn’t wasted that effort. Hydraulic steering assistance allows for plenty of steering feel too."

Previously, in their drive of a pre-production model, they'd gone so far as to say it was a better chassis than the Focus of the time.

It will serve its purpose ok I suppose, but has zero interest from me. Even at currently inflated prices, you must be able to pick up alternatives for this sort ot outlay?

The epitome of cheap motoring, but I thought shed of the week was about interesting cars!
If there’s nothing interesting at this price point we may need a bigger budget. Again.

Love how someone has said a 13yo car on 107k for £2k is 'leggy'. rofl

What exactly do you want? Full main dealer SH, Michelin tyres and a lifetime warranty?

exactly most people on here have no idea how little you get at the moment for £2k. prices have moved up a lot for this segment of cheap cars.

I remember when these had just come out and watching the horrific depreciation on them.

Year old cars with next to no mileage selling for half of the discounted new price, so £7-8k.

I think that would have been a good time to buy, if you didn't care about image and planned to keep the car for a while.

ETA...after doing some searching the MG6 won lots of awards...including AutoExpress' worst depreciating car of 2016. Losing 75% of its value in 3 years.

I have a dealership group in my saved sellers on eBay and they listed one of these recently.

Just checked and it fetched £990.

Only 23k showing, but Cat S and a clutch that was a 'little high' apparently.

Seems to me they're a cheap way of getting a newish good looking car. But perhaps it's style over substance?

The epitome of a shed really. Will be just the trick for dailying until it breaks then move it on. It might surprise and hang on in there for longer than expected.

I hit 'reply' to say something, but can't remember what it was.

I think that kind of sums up the car for me!

If the point of buying a shed is getting something that costs little and does the job of transport with no hassle and minimal cost then it's a win. I always thought they looked OK if bland and every one I have ever seen has been in pristine condition.
