Bad GT2 crash near Goodwood

Obviously not going to speculate as to the specific cause , sadly driver did not survive the crash. I expect the investigation will clarify the reason.
One odd thing that struck me beyond the accident was the claim that 60% of these cars in the UK are declared off road. Is this in any way realistic?.

I drive that section of road on a weekly basis. I know that pothole well, and a week ago was following a small, slow car that swerved out into oncoming traffic to avoid it at the last minute. Fortunately there was no collision that day.
The lovely section of the A272 to the west of Wisborough Green, that final hill, the following straight, speed and overtaking (i.e. all the comments attributed to the 'locals') are almost certainly nothing to do with this accident.
RIP and thoughts with the families of all involved.

Very sad… might have been someone on the way to PCGB day @ Goodwood, as it was on the same morning as the event.
No word on PCGB as to if it was someone.
Torys have let this country break down in every single way imaginable, whilst lining their own pockets with our taxes.
The end cannot come soon enough for this lot.

Very sad.
As someone who owned a 997 GT2 I'll say that I highly doubt he lost control of the car in the dry on that road (which I know well), particularly as the Police say speed was not a factor.
It was a left-hand drive car, he swerved to avoid a pothole, but being lhd may have helped him to swerve too far over the road and hit oncoming traffic.
The fact that this was a GT2 seems irrelevant to the crash.

That is extremely sad.
Not withstanding the fact that UK roads have indeed been allowed to decline into a dreadful and dangerous condition (under different governments and local authorities); from what I can see, the cabin structure looks fairly intact.
So, with seat belts, airbags and other safety features, it may yet be possible that a medical incident caused the collision.

I had the same question. The damage looked survivable. I expect that the cause will be made known. Not withstanding the fact that UK roads have indeed been allowed to decline into a dreadful and dangerous condition (under different governments and local authorities); from what I can see, the cabin structure looks fairly intact.

The drivers side damage looks quite bad imho, in the linked article photos the door appears to be bent badly at the a-pillar.As much as we don’t like to admit it, bone density does reduce with age, what could be survivable by a younger body can be fatal for an older one.
RIP and condolences to the family.
Maybe something for the annoys beyond reason thread but after seeing that there was a piece on our local news on potholes and the JCB machine for fixing potholes.
Despite all the talk of councils getting funds for pothole repairs not a single council has bought one. There doesn't seem to be any political will to actually sort the roads out.

I'm similarly baffled at the lack of interest in (one presumes) leasable pothole repair kit. like the JCB that can operate without a load of men in hi-vis looking on. I drove past what must have been an emergency repair on a nasty hole in a road through our town in Suffolk last night at well past seven in the evening (not complaining, at least it was being done, presumably because it's an emergency diversion when the A14 is blocked)), with five guys, all probably on overtime, watching as one of them watered the fresh infill tarmac with a watering can (it must be part of the process). One wonders as the cost of that size of crew by comparison with a way more efficient piece of kit, a driver and a banksman of some sort to operate temporary traffic lights. And the roads around us are slowly but surely decaying for the lack of attention.
Certainly there's an element of the seemingly endless awful weather that's made the roads worse. There seems to be different standards depending upon council. Typically going from Worcestershire into Shropshire you get a marked deterioration in surfaces, potholes and repair strategy.
Currently the Worcestershire roads are worse than normal but just into Shropshire there's been a giant hole right on the apex of a left hand bend, seen a couple of Range Rovers with destroyed alloys waiting for assistance. This hole was there for weeks with a single warning cone in place, then they put barriers up which got flattened, which is not the council fault. Next day another vehicle with shattered wheel and damage.
To avoid the hole which was on a bend with v poor sightline you had to move out across double white lines partly onto the wrong side. That is just not acceptable.

Quite a few councils are leasing them actually. Like with anything government related, getting ahead of the problem would require some foresight or competence.Despite all the talk of councils getting funds for pothole repairs not a single council has bought one. I've seen the road crews working on the potholes on the A272 but always doing it manually and the repairs rarely last more than a couple of months.

JCB are doing very good business selling or leasing the pot hole pro’s to local authorities that do their own roads maintenance and the national tier 1’s used by LA’s have contracted out maintenance. Problem is the amount that need doing and the leadtime on the kit. Also once the pothole exceeds a certain width / depth then you can’t use that piece of kit to repair it.
